If you can rub ink on it and smash it into paper than this action power team duo will have been-there done-it already as if they had been there and doing it for 80 years, well before you were even a tinkle in your legal guardian's eye socket. Behold! Jessica Spring aka Springtide Press fused Siamese-twin-style with equal and opposite Chandler O'Leary aka Anagram Press! Who can conceive the cultural backwater we'd all be living in were it not for the ancient fine letterpress skills kept alive by these two creative-class citizens? AND I can think of no other Tacoma-based letterpress duo that has done more for dead feminists than these two living feminists.
A story: My first studio tour as a civilian, newly arrived to the city of destiny in the early Two-thousands with my then lady-friend (Ms. Darcy) we had the privilege of visiting the first Springtide Press studio as it was when inhabiting a cramped unheated garage... type cases filled with fonts crammed in every conceivable crevasse... walls all painted strange 90's colors... ancient tools. Very inspirational for my own future American Museum of Alaskan Entrepreneurship. The new Springtide Press Studio is much more clinical/practical and still worth a visit if the Tacoma Studio Tour survives budget cuts into 2012.
Anagram Press never fails to dish up a steamy bowl of shock and awe thanks to her weaponized draftsmanship skills--she can draw like nobody's business! Seriously! You might think you're a good drawer, but not O'Leary good. Even so, these folks give back to the city teaching at risk youth and stuff, just look at Wayzgoose over at Kings Books. One annual event you don't want to ever miss--Steamroller poster prints! They bring an element of showmanship to it too.
See Also: Jessica wins an Award or something. Also also, Sausage Fest Springtide/Anagram Nemesis previously on the Tacomic.

by NineInchNachos on 12/20/2011 @ 2:54pm | what a happy/timely article! "Tacoma is a city full of makers and doers, from artisan craftspeople to industrial manufacturers; a city with a port that holds no dalliance with cruise ships and, of course, a city flanked by one of the largest military bases in the nation. What we have is a city full of people who know how to get things done: people who know how to make things that are, when it comes down to it, nothing less than gifts." postdefiance.com/the-gift-outright/ |
