THE TACOMIC

The Tacoma 44

A cartooning experiment in graceful degradation

The premise of this cartoon was simple enough: draw as many Tacoma City Council applicants as possible from memory, then when memory fails, just see what happens without stopping. Some interesting obstacles in real life include complete electrical furnace failure here at the Holistic Forge Works Corporate Safe House. I drew this cartoon from inside an REI sleeping bag (It is currently  51 degrees). With each successive face drawn I had to combat the urge to go crawl in a warm bed with Ms. Darcy. Hope you can appreciate the suffering I endure for these cartoons.

Hey, this drawing is a lot of fun! Thanks RR

If it's any consolation, our gas furnace isn't doing much better.

by Erik on 12/8/2009 @ 1:55am
Excellent work RR.

Also, this week's Tacomic is a handy guide for the city council and citizens when considering each candidate.

by KevinFreitas on 12/8/2009 @ 7:14am
Hahaha, great work RR!

by Erik on 12/8/2009 @ 8:18am
One could also use this Tacomic to cross off candidates as they are eliminated from the appointment process.

by NineInchNachos on 12/8/2009 @ 8:38am
@erik lets do it!

get your red MS Paint brushes ready!

by Jesse on 12/8/2009 @ 8:54am
Awesome.

by morgan on 12/8/2009 @ 9:24am
HA!

For the record: I do have streetcars runing through my brain.

RR: Why are you the only one with glowy light effects?

by NEAL on 12/8/2009 @ 9:36am
Fine work, Mr. RR.

One thought: candidate BINGO/extreme tic-tac-toe.

by Erik on 12/8/2009 @ 9:40am
get your red MS Paint brushes ready!

Sort of like the last few minutes of the survivor type games when a contestant is eliminated.

by NineInchNachos on 12/8/2009 @ 10:18am
damn the bingo idea is bloody brilliant

by NineInchNachos on 12/8/2009 @ 10:19am
download the web version, circle your choices in lime green, post your bingo card in the comment section. winners will get a special prize!

by Nick on 12/8/2009 @ 10:56am
... also, did I spy a trilobite in one of those portraits? if so then one word, AWESOME!

by morgan on 12/8/2009 @ 11:26am
Wow, RR - I just read your text. Brrr!! You are so dedicated! Your suffering will not go unnoticed.

by NineInchNachos on 12/8/2009 @ 12:13pm
"I've suffered for my art, now it's your turn! ha ha ha"

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 12/9/2009 @ 11:23am
Don't know where you got the model for Julio Quan, RR, but it is spot on. Brilliant work, I suspect it is pre sold several times over. Perhaps time for an auction model?

by Altered Chords on 12/9/2009 @ 12:15pm
You have inspired me to forget the "accent wall" idea for my house and paint a giant trillobite on the wall.

Finally - trillobites are cool again!

I'm thinking t-shirt idea. Tacoma Trillobites! This inspires a poem.

They are
Very, very old
Trillobites.

A taiku poem by altered chords

by NineInchNachos on 12/9/2009 @ 12:36pm
my people are talking to Ms. Lacy-Davis to broker the sale of this cartoon.

The Tacoma Trilobites would make a good nerdy team name for the new SAMI school at Point Defiance... Chess Club?

BREAKING NEWS:

Tune in to TV TACOMA, 12:10 pm on DECEMBER 15th to see your friendly neighborhood political cartoonist presenting a stump speech IN THREE MINUTES TOTAL!

perhaps I can recite my favorite AC'd poem:

R. R. draws with chalk.
Friday lunchtime at Frost Park.
Unless itís raining.

by Altered Chords on 12/9/2009 @ 1:05pm
I remember those old haiku days. Before the Taiku was invented.

Old school.
Yes, those were good times
way back then.

by NineInchNachos on 12/9/2009 @ 1:25pm

by Altered Chords on 12/9/2009 @ 1:30pm

by Jesse on 12/9/2009 @ 8:09pm
My furnace is now busted too. Go figure.

by NineInchNachos on 12/9/2009 @ 9:46pm

by Altered Chords on 12/10/2009 @ 8:10am
Pow Bam
Anderson I am
I am GREAT

There - If that doesn't do it - don't blame me. If it does do it, I expect a phoney baloney appointment to some do-nothing position within your fiefdom.

by NineInchNachos on 12/10/2009 @ 5:48pm
Thanks Mr. Cords.
I believe your poem was the clincher that sold this "spirit portrait" cartoon.

by NineInchNachos on 12/10/2009 @ 5:56pm
meanwhile: alt press publisher John Hathaway is the first person to take advantage of the Tacomic's creative commons license.

You know, I really like the Tacoma Trilobites. It's nerdy, it's cheesy, it's 400 million years old. What is there not to like?

Forget the Goddess of Commerce. I want a 25' long bronze trilobite in Tolfeson.

by Altered Chords on 12/11/2009 @ 8:25am
Tacoma Trillobites first debate topic.

3.14 looks like P I E backwards. While not a palindrome, what should it be called?

MAIL BAG:

Subject: shitty council

rr,

here are some thoughts i posted a while back.

Dear newly elected City Council.
1. We need prettier buses that smell of french fries on the inside.

2. Where is Carson's camera?

3. Please paint all Police vehicles Pistachio green and allow the officers to act as Cab drivers when not arresting people.

4. Somehow get Tacoma in the Guiness Book of World Records. Maybe by eating a lot of something

peace.

by Erik on 1/6/2010 @ 3:14pm
Hey RR,

Can you produce an updated version of the Tacomic with the people who didn't make it with an X over them reality TV style?

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 1/6/2010 @ 5:58pm
I'm thinking Ryan Mello and one of the female candidates. I'll embellish this no further.

by morgan on 1/6/2010 @ 9:01pm
I like Ryan and David.

by Dave_L on 1/6/2010 @ 10:06pm
...with an X over them reality TV style?
Ha. Or Some Girls album cover-style.
Or reduced to Brady Bunch-style.
Or Hollywood Squares-style. Boe to block.
