|Dear Cissero & Jessica will this image work for a T-shirt ? Do you need a vectorized version? Thanks!|
by cisserosmiley on 7/26/2011 @ 12:58am
|looks awesome! the best is if you size it as close to the final t-print size you want before you give it to us, all formats are cool|
by Jesse on 7/26/2011 @ 2:48am
|What is true and what is false about what the guy said in the video?
The cars he points out are sometimes 20 years old as he calls them "new".
"They even have hydro-seeded grass". That's actually the cheap way of making grass. Sod is the expensive way.
"Look, the school bus even comes to their homes". Where doesn't it do that in America?
But what about the welfare comments? What does it financially take to get a place at Salishan? How do you qualify? Do they really mow and maintain the lawns outside of the homes for free? Was Salishan really built out of Social Security money?

|I so want to spoof this video....|
by NineInchNachos on 7/26/2011 @ 7:48am
|@Jinx you should do a Tweed spoof driving in your Land Rover. "Look at all these sweat pants! Just Look. These are your sweat pants. The construction is beautiful, don't get me wrong..."|
by NineInchNachos on 7/26/2011 @ 7:49am
|@cissero Thanks I'll see what I can do!|

|ADVANCE PRAISE FOR TACOMIC T-SHIRT from NWDC Tide Flat Pioneer Kevin Phelps:
"RR - it was so strange to have you request us being FB friends. I have followed your cartoon / comic relief over the years. I saw your testimony just the other day at the Tacoma City Council regarding the electronic billboard issue. It's funny how your mind assigns a face and body to people you have never met. For some reason I thought you were an older guy in your late 60's or early 70's. Wow was I wrong! Btw - good job on your testimony. Anyway, having just put a real face to you name and then getting a FB request was timely. "
by Jesse on 7/26/2011 @ 8:10am
|One thing the guy in the video had right is that the infrastructure in Salishan (curbs, sidewalks, etc.) is better than a lot of Tacoma.
by CaptainBritton on 7/26/2011 @ 8:51am
|Hey I like this design, except is that skunk anatomically correct? Or is that just a "2" ?|
by Mofo from the Hood on 7/26/2011 @ 8:51am
|Interesting Facebook comment. It never occurred to me that Tacoma may be a safe haven for elderly Beatnik anarchists or surviving remnants of atheistic Hippie tribes. |
Yet that haven view does offer a satisfactory explanation to account for Tacoma's Neo-Beatnik and Neo-Hippie members of the current City Council.

What is true about what the guy in the video said?
The buildings are very nice and the streets are in great shape.
What is false about what he said?
Just about everything else.
- There is no such thing as "refugee pay" and the "2600 a month" they receive from the govt is pulled directly from his hind end.
- Salishan was not "built for illegal aliens" - it's a mixed-income development. Those portions of it that are subsidized rental units offer Section 8 housing, with rent adjusted to 30% of the tenant's income.
- Section 8 is a federal program, limited to citizens and certain categories of lawful immigrants, and administered by local housing authorities.
Section 8 eligibility requirements:
Section 8 and immigration status (from Seattle, but these are federal requirements)
Citizens qualify outright, as long as they meet the other requirements. Note that all of the categories of non-citizens who qualify have to be lawfully present.

|Tacomamama instead of pulling other people down, how many dents are in YOUR car huh?|
by jenyum on 7/26/2011 @ 10:01am
|The author of that video seemed to particularly have a bee in his bonnet about Asians living at Salishan. (After all he knew that one Korean girl Grace who got 600 a month from the federal govt - ?)
Anyway, many of these residents own their homes and most did not receive assistance:
Of the subsidized homes purchased for which race and ethnicity information was available, two Asian households (8%) used a subsidy. The relative infrequency of assisted Asian buyers reinforces research findings indicating that Asians are well prepared before buying a home. According to a 2005 Freddie Mac study, prospective Asian home buyers consider cost effective mortgage financing essential and will often wait until they are financially secure before buying a home, with a 20-percent down payment instead of the standard 5 or 10-percent.
by cisserosmiley on 7/26/2011 @ 10:08am
|holy eastside marty campbell...i totally qualify for section 8 housing, except for i already own a home...but i am poor and tired, why won't the feds pay my house payment?|
by fredo on 7/26/2011 @ 10:12am
|the youtube was probably just another anarchist teaparty infiltrator stunt. worked on tacomamama just as intended. heh
We all know that there is no welfare fraud going on whatsoever at salashan and that all the residents are working incessantly on getting out of there. who can blame them?

by jenyum on 7/26/2011 @ 3:26pm
|Sadly, it doesn't matter that he may be a "total nut bag." This meme is now officially everywhere. Just google "elaborate welfare housing" and you'll find a billion references to an "eleborate welfare housing project in Tacoma, WA, BUILT FOR ILLEGALS!"
It's going to be like the "hot coffee" case. Everyone is sure it happened a certain way because the story is everywhere.

by fredo on 7/26/2011 @ 6:52pm
|The narrator makes a bunch of mistakes in describing the Salishan project on youtube. But the title "Elaborate Welfare Housing Project" seems OK. That sort of sums up the neighborhood.|

by jenyum on 7/27/2011 @ 10:45am
|Why, Fredo? With the income mixture and mix of home ownership and rentals I don't think "welfare" is accurate at all.|

isn't being a teenager a state of perpetually exercising first amendment rights?

|I'll try and remember to get reference photo of 253>206. They sell them at Metro Coffee at UWT.|
by jenyum on 7/27/2011 @ 2:10pm
|Most large cities have curfew ordinances. I really don't see it as a big deal.|
I don't think kids under 18 need to be out past midnight, nor do they have much effect on the economic vibrancy of our night life.* Like it or not, alcohol has the best profit margin and kids shouldn't be consuming that anyway.
*after midnight, plenty of teens out spending money from 9 to 12 but after that there's nothing but bars open, it has been thus since I can remember wherever I've lived, with the exception of the occasional midnight movie.
LA has a 10 pm curfew, and that was a real PIA the summer I spent there as a teenager.

|i feel like police would always contact a couple of 13 yr olds walking down a street at 1 AM...just to ask what they are doing
the 28 day re-education element is quite severe for curfew infraction, since this is basically a service and mentorship program it should be offered to youth when a curfew infraction occurs as a social service...parents would have final word on participation

|some backstory on the man who made the video (above)
ANONYMOUS SOURCE: I know Bill, he is a member of our local Electric Vehicle Association and the Northwest Solar Group. Unfortunately, he is also a nutcase who believes he has personally stopped multiple nuclear wars in the last couple of years, has the cure for AIDS in powder form, knows of a battery that would solve all our energy problems that the government has been suppressing for the last god knows how long, is an ambassador and I think it was Knight to Russia... has a ring binder with all his 'documents' which are bad printouts from microsoft paint and conspiracy sites. I'm guessing that putting this out there will make me part of the conspiracy suppressing him, at least I'm not an assassin working for the Catholic Church that sets off atom bombs... Oy Vey!
