Patty Murray and the Mile High Club: Tales From A Joint Select Super Committee

|Well, if we plan to never fight a war against a modern enemy, we don't really need a new KC-767 tanker. After all, we can keep flying the KC-135's until around 2050 or so (latest USAF assessment). It will be kind of awesome, because by that time we can have five-generation crews on a single airframe. I have already crewed Air National Guard KC-135's that had third-generation crew members on board, as in "My grandaddy flew this aircraft when she was delivered back in 1958, and my daddy flew her after getting re-engined back in 1988. Now it's my turn." No kidding- true stories. They don't build them like that anymore...
(and in 2050, they will probably still be refueling B-52's with them...)

|a flying museum of the cold war... always ready to attack deep into the soviet union. I love watching DR. Strangelove and seeing the same planes fly over my house today. Even so, the future is drones... fast cheap and out of control www.npr.org/2011/09/26/140812779/as-dron...|

|The TNT link about the Dreamliner also mentioned the Concorde. Why isn't the superfast Concorde still an option for consumer travel?

|For business travellers, supersonic transatlantic service is a necessity. What took the Concorde 3 hours to do takes a subsonic jumbo 10 hours. With the Concorde out of service, the fastest commercial airliner flying is the 1960's Boeing 727 which can cruise around 0.9 Mach- and no major carrier still flies those because they require a third crew member... (that's a bigger issue to the airlines than fuel costs).|
Yup, a backwards-we-shall go. Soon, we will be back to transcontinental railroads and steamships as the primary form of travel.
