This is one of those rare instances of having a change of heart halfway through drawing a Tacomic.  My initial reaction to the idea of city collecting garbage from weekly to every-other-week was anger.  Conspiracy theories aside for a minute, how will we fit all our crap into that tiny garbage can?  I'll gladly pay through the nose for our civilization's liberal social-engineered city services, but a cut-back on services rendered is an outrage!  BUT THEN I researched the actual plan and am now in full support of nasty meat food-scraps going in the brown yard waste bin and a double-size garbage can at no extra cost.  Heck! I'd have room to cut up some of this horrible ikea particle board and stuff it in that bigger can.  ALSO... i'm sorry but pizza boxes NEED TO GO IN THE YARD WASTE BIN!  also, ENJOY this classic TRUE GRIT raccoon toon.  Did I spell raccoon with  one 'c' in the tacomic?  Gosh darn it

FAQUESTIONS FROM THE GOVERNMENT..

Q: Will my service be cut in half?
A: No. Participants will automatically receive double their garbage collection capacity. For those who discover they don't need a larger or second garbage container, they may go down a size.

Current container size VS. Pilot container size
  • If your current container size is 20 gallons, your pilot container will be 45 gallons
  • If your current container size is 30 gallons, your pilot container will be 60 gallons
  • If your current container size is 60 gallons, your pilot containers will be two 60 gallons
  • If your current container size is 90 gallons, your pilot container will be two 90 gallons

Q: Will I be charged a fee if I want to decrease the size of my garbage container?
A: No.

Q: Can I request additional recycling and yard waste containers at no charge?
A: Yes.

Q: Is my recycling and yard waste collection schedule changing?
A: No.

Food waste

Q: How will food waste recycling work?
A: Food waste will be accepted in your brown yard waste container, which will be collected every other week on your current schedule. You'll receive detailed information closer to the start date.

Q: Is collecting food waste every other week a health hazard?
A: No. Solid Waste Management has coordinated with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, who approves the proposed food waste collection method.

Q: Will there be a way I can dispose of food waste more frequently if necessary?
A: Yes. You may dispose of food waste weekly by alternating use of yard waste and garbage containers.

I hope that this pilot program is successful. It seems like a win win situation for everyone. Less garbage. Less pollution. More tagro for my garden.

RR. Glad to see u changed your mind on this issue.

I'm happy about the prospect of getting a second recycling bin. We've needed more than one for years.

I mean, how hard is it to run a pizza box through the giant wood chipper?

The whole pizza box thing drives me crazy. When I take my recycling to the landfill, the attendants are big on "don't worry, that'll burn off" but supposedly a wee bit of oil on a pizza box makes it non-recyclable.

"I hope that this pilot program is successful. It seems like a win win situation for everyone. Less garbage. Less pollution" tacoma1

If the pilot program proves successful perhaps the city can move to phases II and III which will cause even less garbage and less pollution. Interested? See details below

Current solid waste service: $432 per year (52 pickups x 30 gal)
Current pilot program: $432 per year (26 pickups x 60 gal)
Fredo's predicted phase II: $432 per year (12 pickups x 120 gal)
Fredo's ultimate phase III: $432 per year (1 pickup x 1440 gal)

The ultimate win win endorsed by the feedtacoma contributors.

yes jenyum but it's a WIN WIN WIN WIN, since there's almost never a garbage pickup there is no diesel pollution. I thought clean air was a good thing.

So what if you have life forms living in the bottom of your garbage can that haven't been discovered yet? This could be a new syndicated TV show: Garbage Warriors Tacoma.

Don't worry, your garbage bill isn't going to be reduced because any funds saved will go towards "creating GREEN solutions to our urban problems"...right.

What do they plan on doing with the savings from the decreased frequency in service?

Perhaps they can give the unskilled and undereducated trash collectors $80k a year instead of *only* $60k? lol

seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews...

From the above article in the Seattle Times: "Waste Management has repeatedly described its final offer as a reasonable one, particularly during a recession. It proposed increasing hourly pay over five years to $29.09 an hour. Currently, drivers make $26.29 an hour, or about $55,000 per year. The contract offer would increase that to $60,500 by 2015. With an average of six hours overtime per week, the company says, the top salary would be $74,121.

The total value of the contract including medical benefits and pension contributions comes to $109,553 annually, according to the company."

OOps,scratch that! That's $109k in salary and benefits today!! Perhaps they need $150k??? lol

But hey, I suppose that is up in Seattle. What are they making here?

thanks jesse for bringinging this back around to the main issue, who cares about schedules...look at the displacement of city-run(citizen-run?) -for - WASTE CONNECTION INC. run programs. it is a prelude to total garbage privatization. if you doubt look at the wa state pdc and you will see a load of tacoma politicians always being payed by waste connections inc. it is exactly what it looks and feels like...
also...all the garbage collection in the county is already done by waste connections inc. -tacomas' future

@nin...i think i am just irrationally bummed because i thought our landfill was more...progressive? or technologically advanced? than to just get all filled up and then buy space at the next dump over...i thought tpu and the people and myself had a better plan? not that we should have i am just surprised

yeah weren't they building something new and fancy over there at the land fill too?

by NineInchNachos

You know, a land fill is kinda like one big litter box. What do the Grit City Kitties think about all this I wonder? How can I contact them for a press release?

by ixia
on 6/21/2011 @ 2:00pm
It's a fantastic idea. We never fill our trash, and we already have the smallest option. It’s been possible to send kitchen scraps (no meat or dairy) with the brown bins for a long time. Works great for us. I think Tacoma Solid Waste is about the best department the city has.

on 6/21/2011 @ 2:16pm
but what do you do with your pizza boxes Ixia ? burn them in the electric kiln ? Isn't that bad for the cone ?

by NineInchNachos

CONFESSION: sometimes I cut up the pizza box if it's not at all stained to look like regular cardboard.
