The Tacomic in association with the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action urges you to somehow Stop the Navy from building twelve new Trident submarines (at a cost of at least $100 billion). "Although we want to stop this stupid submarine project, we are doing it to seek positive goals - spending that money on life-affirming things and moving towards a nuclear weapons-free world."

To what degree would you defend your idea?

by fredo on 10/8/2013 @ 9:10am
Keeping America a safe place so that political cartoonists will  be free to disseminate their points of view as they see fit. In less safe countries people who try to be witty are summarily beheaded.

by NineInchNachos on 10/8/2013 @ 9:47am
a fleet of nuclear submarines is preventing cartoonist decapitation?   O' Grandpa!

@mofo: all the degrees !

where were the nukes to save Molly Norris?

FACT: cartoonists/children/kittens/puppies are FAR more likely to be killed by poisons and cancer THANKS to nuclear weapons!

" cartoonists/children/kittens/puppies are FAR more likely to be killed by poisons and cancer THANKS to nuclear weapons"

Thanks for your fine example of twisted logic. We shouldn't have an armed forces because cancer is a bigger threat.

by NineInchNachos on 10/8/2013 @ 12:27pm
a real threat is more dangerous than an imaginary one!  you can quote me.

by fredo on 10/8/2013 @ 1:32pm
  The 9/11 bombings were imaginary.

You can quote me.

Hijacked Boeing jumbo jets..... These nuclear submarines do nothing!

by fredo on 10/8/2013 @ 2:22pm
The Trident subs aren't intended to address EVERY threat to the US.

Do the poison and cancer prevention efforts you would rather spend tax money on provide a deterrent to foreign invaders?   If so, how so?

by NineInchNachos on 10/8/2013 @ 2:42pm
Imagine air fit to breath, water fit to drink, dirt not riddled with toxic poisons! More people would vote with their feet... Want to live here... In turn be less likely to want to blow it up.  Eh?

by fredo on 10/8/2013 @ 2:54pm
Nobody is saying we shouldn't have clean air and water. The development of the tridents doesn't have anything to do with clean air and water.

Why are you so easily confused about national issues?

by NineInchNachos on 10/8/2013 @ 3:15pm
I feel that tridents have more to do with corporate welfare and an illusion of national security that our planet does not want or need.

by fredo on 10/8/2013 @ 4:09pm
The president has taken an OATH to protect our country against all enemies foreign and domestic and congress has provided him with a budget exclusively for DEFENSIVE purposes. The trident funds are not available for your preferred purposes. But you would be interested to know that we also fund clean air and water efforts as well as tridents. It isn't an either or proposition.

Furthermore, Isn't it a bit naïve to think that big corporations are NOT going to profit from cleaning our air and water?

by Jesse on 10/8/2013 @ 5:01pm
Our military is so big we now fight ghosts.  Terrorism is just crime on a larger scale.  It's not some magical sort of tragedy that only the military can solve. It's not stoppable with a million tanks.

Here's a graph of our military spending vs many other MAJOR countries in the world.  Why do we do this?

by fredo on 10/8/2013 @ 5:32pm
"Why do we do this?".

Quite simply Jesse, America is the world's number one superpower, and other nations look to us to keep them safe. It's not fair to our citizenry to bear a disproportionate share of the costs but that's just the way it is.

by NineInchNachos on 10/8/2013 @ 6:52pm
maybe someday America will defeat the soviet union and we can spend all this insane amount of money someplace else... like to end hunger, poverty, disease etc. etc.

by NineInchNachos on 10/8/2013 @ 6:54pm
thanks to Tea Party Republican fifth-columnists, we might not be the world's last superpower much longer!  USA! USA!

by fredo on 10/8/2013 @ 6:57pm

The democrats control the Senate and the executive branch. If you voted for a Democrat you are partially  responsible for any "insane spending" that's taking place.

old people stuck in their ways.... TERRIFIED of the world!  Time will be our salvation.

no money for community centers.... plenty of money for world-ending scare crows.

by fredo on 10/8/2013 @ 7:38pm

nincompoops stuck in their ways...apologizing for all the things that made America great. Maybe you were a breach baby.

by NineInchNachos on 10/8/2013 @ 7:40pm
we tried greatness. now  Let's try something else.

by Jesse on 10/8/2013 @ 7:51pm
I'd vote to cut the military budget in half and go after all the leaches that are fake disabled on Social Security.  I'd lift the Social Security taxable income to infinity dollars (currently like $106k-ish) so we could fund REAL retirements for people who worked their whole lives.  I'd use the military cuts to decrease the debt and declare war on diseases instead of on brown people.  I'd rebuild cities infrastructure and invest in solar and electric cars... All if I were king of the USA.

by NineInchNachos on 10/8/2013 @ 8:20pm
imagine how many murals you could fund with the trident money!  A segway for every human!

by JesseHillFan on 10/8/2013 @ 8:32pm
I also believe that the U.S. should reduce its thermonuclear stockpile. They should give one of those special weapons to me so that I can protect my neighborhood.
Also Robert Hill should get one as well when he gets out of jail.

"Air Force fires general who tends nuke missiles"

Air Force General is possible alcoholic. Navy Vice Admiral is possible gambler. Both have been relieved of nuke duties, pending investigations. These are the people with their fingers on the US nuclear buttons, ladies and gentlemen!
