(1962 - 2012) Ivan the Gorilla was abducted from Africa as a baby and trafficked to Tacoma in the early 60's. The baby female gorilla he was abducted with died shortly thereafter. For over 25 years Ivan the Gorilla was tortured in solitary confinement by the Irwin Family (Owners of the B&I Store) for the amusement of shoppers. Luckily humans equipped with functioning empathy/emotions rescued Ivan in the 1980's and he ended up in a wildlife refuge where he could see blue sky for the first time. Ivan enjoyed painting and the company of his two female companion gorillas until he died in his sleep in 2012. Tacoma has never had to answer for these crimes, but with the addition of the Ivan the Gorilla Reconciliation Park we have a chance to take a baby step in the right direction. I'm so sorry Ivan.

|
by Thorax O'Tool on 8/28/2012 @ 3:26pm | I'm surprised that Fredo hasn't chimed in yet with a long analysis of why he shouldn't have to pay for it.

by cisserosmiley on 8/28/2012 @ 6:04pm | Tear down the B & I and build Ivan his park !!! |
by fredo on 8/28/2012 @ 7:19pm |
I'm not sure the B&I store is actually in Tacoma. Maybe Lakewood could build this park. Hey, they could appoint Skeeter to handle the money! |
by NineInchNachos on 8/28/2012 @ 7:58pm | sweet relief !!!!

Ancestor worship that any public school alumnus could appreciate. (Also: The idea for this comic goes way beyond the acceptable norm shown in the 1968 sci-fi movie "Planet of the Apes.") |
by Erik on 8/29/2012 @ 12:20am | This is one of those great Tacomics that, although well done, may have a difficult time finding a buyer. |
by fredo on 8/29/2012 @ 6:53am | I applaud the effort to create an Ivan Reconciliation Park... to be funded by private donations. This will be a wonderful thing and I'm anxious to hear Mr. O'Tolle inform us of how much he intends to personally pledge. Regarding efforts to create Reconciliation Parks using public (tax payer furnished) funding I'd like to see a master list of all injustices ever associated with our city and our city government. before deciding which injustice should be "reconciled." I notice that a while back our mayor made a derogatory remark about a group of people. I would suggest that we need a park in tacoma to reconcile with this group. Let's call it the "Republican Party Reconciliation Park" for lack of a better title. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/29/2012 @ 9:24am | of course, lakewood! goo.gl/maps/i8yX4 truly an evil place |
by Jesse on 8/29/2012 @ 9:49am | I like the Ivan Gorilla Reconsiliation Park idea! You could get a storefront window about 5' x 5' floor space behind it and set up an interactive memorial for Ivan. Just pay $0.50 to pull back the curtain to see it all! Maybe a Church of Beer instead? Morgan Alexander? Are you reading this? Inspiration: Portland's 24 Hour Church of Elvis. www.24hourchurchofelvis.com/coinopdemo.html |

by Jesse on 8/29/2012 @ 10:15am | It would be cool to have something that interesting in downtown and you're just the guy to do it RR!!! Strait across from the grafitti garage is a nice little window and door setup that I think used to be a tiny antique shop? Now defunct. Great spot for something! And small too! |
by fredo on 8/29/2012 @ 10:47am |
that would be kind of cool in DT Tacoma. even though Ivan isn't associated with Tacoma. He was kept at Lakewood's B&I store. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/29/2012 @ 10:48am | yes.. must update cartoon!
|
by Thorax O'Tool on 8/29/2012 @ 7:17pm | Methinks we need a kickstarter campaign to build a 100m statue of Ivan ...next to the tallest building in town. |
by fredo on 8/30/2012 @ 8:03am |
Thorax, I've just reviewed the guidelines for Kickstarter and I don't see any reason why you can't pursue this project. Once you get it started I'll bet a lot of people who follow feedtacoma will wish to contribute even though Ivan never lived in Tacoma. |
by fredo on 8/30/2012 @ 8:11am | I searched the internet for gorilla statues and all I could find were some 20 foot tall inflatable gorillas for about $800/ Do you think that would be OK? The inflatable gorillas have their arms up over their head like they are squashing something. Perhaps you could order an inflatalbe goddess of commerce and Ivan could be crushing her. Just a thought. |
by fredo on 8/30/2012 @ 8:13am |
when I try to add a photo the photo icon shows a starburst and won't let me post the gorilla picture. what's up with that? |
by cisserosmiley on 8/30/2012 @ 8:40am | Its a self editing photo loader...if you are full of shit it won't load your pic. |
by fredo on 8/30/2012 @ 8:42am |
Well it must be defective then, because I could start a discussion right now and the same button would work on that thread. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/30/2012 @ 9:08am | we made it on the New Takhoman today
|
by JesseHillFan on 8/31/2012 @ 5:08pm | Cool. Too bad Ivan wasn't given a kitten to play with like Koko.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koko_(gorilla) |
by NineInchNachos on 9/4/2012 @ 10:50am | again, tacomic delayed due to illness. this virus has really knocked me for a loop. Also, not having healthcare sucks.

by JesseHillFan on 9/4/2012 @ 12:25pm | RR if you are in dire straights and have no money nor normal healthcare Sea Mar Community Health Center is very compassionate towards low income or even the destitute. They did dental care for me when no other ordinary dentist would when I was really bad off financially for a spell. www.seamar.org/location.php?xloc=17&... |

by Mofo from the Hood on 12/3/2012 @ 10:18am | A life-sized statue of Ivan the gorilla outside the gate of Pt. Defiance Zoo? What's the causal connection? I guess the bureaucrats at Metro Parks and Ivan are evolutionary links that offer much joy--keeping in mind the necessity of relating to them on their level. |
