Hilltop Crips vs. Tacoma Safe and Clean
With Special Mockery of Worthless Seattle Security Guards

I know it is always boring to compare Tacoma to Seattle; however, these are special circumstances. While Seattle rent-a-cops are content to stand around while a fallen young lady gets kicked in the face a bunch of times (not everyone can be a hero like our own Michel Pierce); Tacoma real-cops are busy busting one of the oldest and most feared gangs--the Hilltop Crips. This is a bold move for Tacoma's Safe-and-Clean/Reduce-crime-by-50% mandate and reactions on Hilltop (aka Upper Tacoma) are mixed. Some reactions are just plain astonishing. We'll see how it plays out in court, but I know some moms who are relieved to have these guys off the street.

by tacoma1 on 2/17/2010 @ 8:32am | RR - Great job on this Tacomic. I hope Mr Lindquist and Co. aren't finished. As far as I'm concerned, they can put the east side and So. Tac. gangs in jail alongside this bunch. Assuming these dirtbags are found to be guilty, of course. Gangs are a blight on our fair city. We need to serve notice that Tacoma is not a safe place to be a gang banger. If we get these gangs in jail, our crime statistics will go down. Then the Seattle based and obviously biased media will have a harder time disparaging T-Town. When they report crime in Seattle, they rarely mention Seattle, but instead they list the neighborhood, i.e. Rainier Valley, Capitol Hill, Greenwood, etc. They certainly don't want to get the fine folk in Magnolia upset about crime in Seattle. It must have been tough on them since this recent beating happened in a facility named the "Seattle Bus Tunnel". These same news organizations, when reporting crime in the Pierce County always seem to work in the fact that Tacoma is in Pierce County, and the although the crime occured in Pierce County, and may not be associated with Tacoma, Tacoma is in Pierce County. |
by Jake on 2/17/2010 @ 8:59am | It would be nice if the Tacoma media actually reported Tacoma's drop in crime. There was a pretty good drop in 2009 and the only report the TNT did was drop in homicides which isn't really an indication of crime overall. Crime was down in almost every category in Tacoma, many by double digits. Seattle had increases in almost every category, many with double digit increases. Seattle also has a very high aggravated assault rate when compared to Tacoma.
Aggravated Assault: attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravate bodily injury, usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by the means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. This is the aggravated assaults for 2009 through November: Seattle: 1825 (+17%) Tacoma: 394 (-12%) Seattle is 3 times the population as Tacoma so do the math. |
by NineInchNachos on 2/17/2010 @ 9:25am | Tacoma 1, my contacts on the east side say all the gangs are terrified that they'll be next. Let's hope so! |
by NineInchNachos on 2/17/2010 @ 9:36am | new gang activity in Seattle:
"Police are asking the public for tips that may help them identity a half-dozen young men who assaulted two people and broke windows in a car in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. A man walking alone late Saturday night was knocked down and suffered head injuries when they tried to take his backpack. A short time later, early Sunday morning, a woman getting out of her car was hit on the head, leaving a bloody cut. Witnesses say the same group wearing dark coats with hoods broke out the windows of a parked car." www.thenewstribune.com/updates/story/107... |

by Altered Chords on 2/17/2010 @ 10:35am | The Seattle cartoons are not even funny. Seattle sucks.
Is looking for 1/2 dozen young men wearing dark coats and hoods considered "profiling". We should also look for groups of 3 to 4 women in their 80s wearing gray coats and tan hats so that no one is offended or falsely targeted. |
by fredo on 2/17/2010 @ 11:06am | chords, right. RR's contribution was much funnier. Not only does Tacoma feature lower crime and better policing, we also have better cartoonists! |

Umm, didn't the Wendell Brown thing happen in, like, 1990 or something? Fredo, you need some new material. And besides, there aren't any prostitutes in Tacoma. At least not on the streets. And no, SOAP didn't clean up the streets; Craig Newmark did. |
by NineInchNachos on 2/17/2010 @ 3:12pm | can somebody splain the wendell brown thing? |
by panachronic on 2/17/2010 @ 3:25pm | Wendell Brown was a Pierce County Councilman who got caught up in a prostitution sting, a lonnnnnggggggg time ago. |

by KevinFreitas on 2/18/2010 @ 7:40am | @panachronic: when the weather is better there are easily a handful of prostitutes I notice getting in and/or out of vehicles around the 25th and Pacific on my way to/from work. It's truly a sad sight but it does exist there and I'm sure elsewhere about town. I'm definitely in favor of punishing johns! |

by greenfringegarden on 2/18/2010 @ 1:03pm | Great cartoon...I agree with the cleanup efforts and hope it continues full force. While I know that some community members see this situation in terms of race instead of safety and security... there is the fact that all Americans deserve to live in safe secure neighborhoods.....these gangsters are not stealing and committing violent crimes to pay for food and baby diapers...bad apples come in all colors...and we could easily argue the gangsters at the top of the heap have been those white dudes in the white house of recent years. They all need to go...and face jail time as far as we are concerned.
Just to let the Tacoma folks know however...as a former Seattle resident...I never heard negative press about Tacoma, or had negative attitudes about T-Town...we love both cities and the folks therein...the longer we are here the more laid back we get...good work all. GFG |
by Altered Chords on 2/18/2010 @ 1:14pm | GFG - are you suggesting that the white people in Washington DC are gangsters but the black, asian and hispanic people are not? Are you also suggesting that gang activities are OK if the money derived therefrom is used for baby diapers and food? Bad apples do come in both red and green. We all know it's not easy being green. Thank goodness we have red apples telling everyone that the green ones are good too - unless they are bad. Then it's up to the fruit flies to take care of them. |
by NineInchNachos on 2/18/2010 @ 1:29pm | if the gangs were stealing to feed babies it would make a better made for TV movie. Just sayin' |
by The Jinxmedic on 2/22/2010 @ 2:04pm | babies, pit bulls, -it's all the same. |
by greenfringegarden on 2/28/2010 @ 11:22am | To AC and All: No...I was trying to say that gangsters come in all shapes and colors and income levels and levels of society. My son showed me pictures of his 6th Grade University Place Camp on a Facebook account where his counselor...a Curtis High School Student was flipping gang signs. This kid supposedly the "best of the best" last year encouraged his "campers" to dress up in gang wear and flip signs...some of the kids like my son refused and were roughed up for it. Needless to say I wish I had the $150.00 back for this "positive camp experience, that teaches kids to get out of their comfort zones."

by NineInchNachos on 4/22/2010 @ 8:09pm | Despite suggestions that the small demonstration represents “the black community,” there’s no evidence that it reflects the views of a majority or even a large minority of Tacoma’s African Americans. But many blacks do have concerns about the racial dimensions of the case – some simply because they know the public is seeing the faces of so many black suspects associated with a single violent enterprise.
