Dale Chihuly Museum at the Seattle Space Needle Fun Forrest
or Dale Chihuly and Cthulhu IF THEY MATED

While the great City of Seattle is abuzz with talk of a Dale Chihuly Museum rising from the ashes of the once quaint Seattle Space Needle Fun Forrest vintage amusement park, foreboding rainclouds of death converge over the stainless steel Apollo space capsule replica--formerly known as the International Museum of Glass and Contemporary Art. Look, Seattle can steal all our International Financial Service District services; Seattle can steal our 3-string guitar playing hipster musicians... BUT the City of Tacoma will always have the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. Nobody can change that no matter how hard they try.

by Jesse on 4/6/2010 @ 7:57am | Eh... this whole glass museum thing in Seattle makes me ill. |
by Mofo from the Hood on 4/6/2010 @ 8:58am | Tacoma once had an amusement park just inside the main entrance to Point Defiance and the ferry dock and boat launch ramp. "Funland" was dismantled and the area became a parking lot for empty boat trailers.
I guess the adults back then thought kids would rather enjoy playing around a bunch of empty boat trailers in a dirt parking lot. Same now with this Seattle site conversion. Who's thinking about the kids? You know what's fun for kids when they're around glass?... Throwing rocks. Oh sure, we like to think that we can teach our pre-teen sons to study the form and color theory behind a giant glass scallop---but really, the kids are thinking about how cool it would look to shatter that brittle overwrought clam shell. |

by jenyum on 4/6/2010 @ 9:33am | Seattle Center sucks now. Jason took the kids a few weeks ago (to their former absolute favorite place in the universe) there was nothing there but a couple of rides for very little kids and a center house full of closed up restaurants. In the middle of the day on a Saturday. The center house was absolutely packed with kids and families for some event or other and the only thing open was one hot dog stand. Lame, lame, and lamer. And sad. And stupid. Good thing there will be a glass museum because as has been noted children love to play with glass! Not that there's anything wrong with having a glass museum (or taking kids to it*) but to remove the fun forest and replace it with one has got to be one of the all time most disappointing taking candy from a baby dumb ass adult moves of all time. Other than that, yeah, I think it's a super idea. *Nothing in this rant should be interpreted as in any way denigrating the Museum of Glass(Tacoma) |
by Erik on 4/6/2010 @ 9:46am | This part of Seattle is getting kind of scary and dangerous. Plus, aggressive panhandling is out of control there: The proposed law is not aimed at so-called "passive panhandlers" -- the ones with signs who wait for you to approach them. It's targeted at aggressive pan handlers, the ones who can be very annoying and sometimes frightening. "That stand up and physically intimidate people walking into business and ask them for money and people feel threatened," said Leslie Smith with the Pioneer Square Community Association. Leaders who represent downtown neighborhoods -- the business owners, residents and shoppers -- are urging the city of Seattle to crack down. And city councilor Tim Burgess is carrying their torch, as he's experienced the problem. "(They're) screaming at you, being close by getting in your personal space; using threatening language, abusive language," Burgess explained. www.komonews.com/news/local/88235157.htm... Seattle is on the way down. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 4/6/2010 @ 9:53am | Seattle took Daniel Blue, soon they'll be taking our Glass Museum. Where will it all end? Will they take our historical society museum, Three Fingered Jack? Will the Java Jive be transported to Capitol Hill? Does this mean that Seattle really wants to be Tacoma? No doubt they already have their eye on the Spanish Steps and the Urban Waters. |
by fredo on 4/6/2010 @ 10:47am | They can have it all, just don't take Crenshaw! |
by Jesse on 4/6/2010 @ 1:44pm | Why can't they have a museum of fire there instead? It would seem appropriate with the Seattle Fire of 1889 and all. Think of the creativity you'd have to exude if you were the curator. I am sure those people can think of something else besides taking our pirate traitor museum. |
by Nick on 4/6/2010 @ 2:10pm | My thoughts on the matter? Don't care.
I live in Tacoma not Seattle, I really couldn't care less what those retarded monkeys are doing up there to deprive their children of fun. Tacoma's identity is not so fragile that a nearby city's "copycat" schemes will hurt it. In fact, it indicates Tacoma's sphere of influence is expanding. Neato! |
by NineInchNachos on 4/6/2010 @ 2:49pm | Yeah Nick... Coopetition! I like that museum of fire idea. I'm seeing a candle exhibit... eternal flames... Olympic torches.. |
by UnstableArt on 4/6/2010 @ 2:52pm | Seattle took Daniel Blue? I was under the impression he left. |
by Jesse on 4/6/2010 @ 3:07pm | I was thinking art with fire features, how fire has reshaped mankind, tragic fires altering history, fire as a tool, etc. There's a lot you could do with it. |
by NineInchNachos on 4/6/2010 @ 3:08pm | He wasn't trying to leave us, but we pushed him away. |
by NineInchNachos on 4/6/2010 @ 3:11pm | on my face book I was asking for local media coverage links of the chihuly museum.... wasn't much... but got an interesting comment: William D. Osborne wrote: "Only ones I've heard were mainstream local TV news...who presented the topic as if a museum of glass objects doesn't yet exist." |
by seejane on 4/6/2010 @ 3:22pm | If he's not careful Chihuly's legacy will be a string of empty glass museums across the NW.
And, does anybody really want to see an entire exhibit of Chihuly glass... it would be listening to an entire Kenny G CD in one sitting. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 4/6/2010 @ 3:42pm | "And, does anybody really want to see an entire exhibit of Chihuly glass... it would be listening to an entire Kenny G CD in one sitting. "
Perhaps the Kenny G will be the background music in the museum. I can see a demand for expanded mental health coverage in Obama's health reform plan. |
by Warren on 4/6/2010 @ 3:48pm | I like the Museum of Fire idea. Museum of Ice? Water? Steam? We could sell them all off to Seattle. Oh, Oh... The Museum of Tacoma in Seattle. Our chamber of commerce could sponsor it! Any one up for visiting the "Seattle-Tacoma" International Airport and switching the names on the sign to "Tacoma-Seattle" like it should be? Tacoma is Seattle's best kept secret. |
by Erik on 4/6/2010 @ 4:07pm | Seattle took Daniel Blue? I was under the impression he left.
No, they took him Unstable in the middle of the night. The "leaving town" thing has now become its own artistic genre: www.feedtacoma.com/forum/art-culture/lea... |
by Warren on 4/6/2010 @ 4:42pm | We're keeping the stickers. He wasn't allowed out of the 253 with the 253. Confiscated them all we have. |
by UnstableArt on 4/6/2010 @ 4:53pm | I think the leaving town thing is just practical. Anyone in a chosen field is going to relocate to where it's in demand. You have to go to your audience. To quote The Distinguished Gentleman:
Thomas Jefferson Johnson: Y'all remember Willie Sutton? Van Dyke: My hero. Thomas Jefferson Johnson: What did he say when they asked him why he robbed banks? Van Dyke: 'Cause that's where the money is. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 4/6/2010 @ 6:35pm | Is being pushed away the same as moving away? I think NIN is right, Daniel Blue was pushed. In his own words, (and if this doesn't bring tear to your eyes and a lump to your throat, nothing will) his prophetic words: Tacoma: I aint trying to leave you In fact Im trying to stay But everything that you do Feels like, youre pushing me away I tried hard to believe you But youd nothing true to say How can I continue To pretend That living For tomorrow Is ever going to be today Love it or leave You cant have both You say to me Im like a ghost I cant let go My wont holds on Aint nobody knows How well I come Home Tacoma Tacoma Tacoma My home I aint trying to leave you In fact Im trying to stay But everything that you do Feels like, youre pushing me away I tried hard to believe you But youd nothing true to say How can I continue To pretend That living For tomorrow Is ever going to be today If it isn't too painful for you the video can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICzxygABVRA |
by UnstableArt on 4/6/2010 @ 7:41pm | Well there it is. He wasn't taken - he reluctantly left. It is somewhat comforting to know of local artists that share similar sentiments. I don't in the slightest blame Blue and Voronoff for leaving. If your greatest efforts aren't yielding any fruit, it's time to pack it in and head for greener pastures. They saw the potential of this place, and they invested their time and energy to make it real. No one can do this all on their own. They needed the support of the community. They didn't get enough. Time to leave. |
by NineInchNachos on 4/6/2010 @ 8:59pm | is this what change looks like?? |
by marumaruyopparai on 4/6/2010 @ 9:51pm | Can't squeeze blood from a stone. Perhaps too many people of Tacoma are stranded on the lower rungs of Maslow's hierarchy.
The more economic opportunity available to the public the more people with plenty of money and free time available to preoccupy themselves with the artistic endeavors and proclivities of others. Economic prosperity breeds hedonism. Hedonism leads to all manner of self-indulgence, like indulgence in art. I'm sure there are plenty more snobbish rich folk and hipsters roaming the streets of Seattle looking to invest time and money in the expansion of their artistic horizons. Hopefully RR already has too much equity tied up in the Tacomic(TM) brand to think about jumping ship and renaming his enterprise the Seacomic or something like that. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 4/6/2010 @ 10:03pm | I am confused about the following line from the song "Ain't nobody knows How well I come". I'm not sure I'm hip enough to know what he's talking about. |

by Altered Chords on 4/7/2010 @ 10:08am | His grammar is very bad.
I want to see his poetry license! I suspect he never got a proper Tacoma poetry license and was deported. |
by NSHDscott on 4/7/2010 @ 11:01am | If Seattle wants to be more "adult" by converting kids' play areas to no-touch museums, maybe Tacoma should go the opposite direction. Seattle takes Russell and builds competing glass museum; Tacoma entices Seattle's kids with better children's museum, zoos, parks, etc. |
by NineInchNachos on 4/7/2010 @ 11:16am | here is a PODCAST where the Seattle horses ass crew sit around and basically make fun of the whole idea of a 'glass museum'
horsesass.org/?p=26110 pretty funny. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 4/7/2010 @ 11:24am | Deep beneath the churning black waters of the Narrows, in the shadows of the Bridgeggoths, He lies in wait for the end times. A dark mass of unfathomable terror, to see him causes insanity. Stay out of the water, least you awaken... Cthuly! |
by UnstableArt on 4/7/2010 @ 10:07pm | No, you certainly can't get blood from a stone. If Blue and Vorornoff couldn't find a niche for their own brand of artistic expression here, then sure - why not see if it flies somewhere else. It's either that or change what they were doing, which is fine if that's what they really wanted.
About hedonism? I think it's alive and well in Tacoma as well as all over the US. Video games, movies, and cd's don't serve any practical purposes either. But then, these are the most popular forms of artistic expression today. People will invest in the things that hold the most importance to them, as well they should. Everyone's entitled to make whatever choices they deem most appropriate for themselves. |
by NineInchNachos on 4/7/2010 @ 10:16pm | International Chalk Museum.... no Experience Chalk Project...
.... help me come up with a funny acronym |
by NineInchNachos on 4/7/2010 @ 10:18pm | anyway do you think tourists would pay money to see a bunch of fancy glass salad bowls? |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 4/7/2010 @ 10:56pm | Well, no one has stood up for Daniel Blue more than I have. I warned people this would happen but they didn't listen to me. To some people, and I hate to say this, he couldn't leave soon enough. Is a Tacoma that will not support Daniel Blue the kind of town we want to live in? The day will come when we'll wish Daniel Blue was back in Tacoma. As with Neko Case, the naysayers of today will be welcoming Daniel Blue back in triumph. You don't know what you have until it is gone. As Daniel Blue sang so eloquently:
I ain't trying to leave you In fact I'm trying to stay But everything that you do Feels like, you're pushing me away Some of us believed in Daniel Blue and what he stood for. Daniel Blue stood for Tacoma Tacoma Tacoma My Home. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 4/7/2010 @ 11:02pm | Who the hell is Neko Case? |
by NineInchNachos on 4/7/2010 @ 11:09pm | Neko Case is "sexy time" for your ears. |
by UnstableArt on 4/8/2010 @ 10:20am | C.halking H.ooligans. A.t the L.ively K.orner
I think a backwards "K" would look edgy but we'd probably get sued. Many people end up leaving home to find their place, but their home towns will always have influence over their lives and in the way they express themselves. Influence also works in reverse. Chihuly has done quite a bit of traveling and while he's no longer a resident, no one can deny what kind of influence he has here. To me, Blue is synonymous with Tacoma, and I think he'll always have a place here. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 4/8/2010 @ 10:22am | What about Sir Mix-A-Lot? Certainly a LOT more famous than either Dan Blue or Neko Case can hope to be.
...And if you listen to "Jump on It", the last line gives props to T-Town. |
by NSHDscott on 4/8/2010 @ 10:44am | Hey, regarding this whole thread of "Tacoma pushing Blue away" ... what exactly did we do wrong? I don't remember that ever being said. Did we fail to attend his concerts in enough numbers? Buy enough 253 heart stickers? Kiss his ass enough? I mean, really! The guy isn't Jesus, although he could maybe play him in a Christmas play. I liked reading Blue's writings, and I thought his band is very talented, and I can see that he became a bit of a figurehead for "Tacoma cool" ... but in my opinion he moved away, not because Tacoma pushed him away or Seattle stole him, but because he wanted to move and so he did. Feel free to let me know if I'm wrong, but this time tell me how I'm wrong. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 4/8/2010 @ 10:59am | There were many in Tacoma that were jealous of Daniel Blue's talent and resented him. Just as Tacoma was known as the City of Destiny Daniel Blue was Tacoma's destiny. Some people couldn't handle it and they pushed Daniel Blue from Tacoma. Will Tacoma ever see her full potential? Now that he's gone I don't even think PSP will name a pizza after him, more's the pity. |
by NineInchNachos on 4/8/2010 @ 11:13am | this comment thread has inspired me to draw a TRUE GRIT(tm) daniel blue(tm) SPIRIT CAPTURE(tm) PORTRAIT in CHALK(R)
join me at frost park this friday. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 4/8/2010 @ 11:23am | Eh. I never cared for Dan Blue's music, and the guitar missing strings drives me batty. I've offered to restring it for him numerous times, but he never took me up on it. His loss. No one person has a cartel on being "talented" or being "an artistic force" in Tacoma. If he wants to move, wish him luck ...he'll need it in a bigger pond with much bigger fish. @ Crenshaw: why not do something yourself to get PSP to name a pizza after YOU? |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 4/8/2010 @ 11:37am | And what would you suggest would be on a Daniel Blue pizza or for that matter a Crenshaw Sepulveda? I'm actually curious to know what a Thorax O'Tool would have on it as well. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 4/8/2010 @ 11:56am | The Daniel Blue would be a plain cheese pizza with a mountain of panchetta in the exact center, served with a bottle of whine. This pizza will only be offered to-go. The Crenshaw would be a powerhouse of flavor, including one topping from each category of the food pyramid. I'm thinking sausage, red bell pepper, feta cheese and breadcrumbs over the top. A very well rounded and balanced pizza. The O'Tool would have artichoke, 3 kinds of cheese (Colby, Jack, Parmesan) sprinkled on top, black olives, peppers, zucchini and be in a pesto sauce, drizzled lightly with olive oil |
by NineInchNachos on 4/8/2010 @ 12:21pm | the RR Anderson 'brand' is available to the first pizza establishment to officially recognize the pepperoni-pineapple-garlic combo. |
by NSHDscott on 4/8/2010 @ 4:27pm | Still not clear on who those jealous people were who pushed Blue out of Tacoma, or how they did the pushing. Not that I really care, just curious. |
by Jesse on 4/8/2010 @ 4:27pm | Daniel Blue, shmaniel poo. He's only one person. |
by NineInchNachos on 4/8/2010 @ 4:36pm | the city literally pushed him away. you know... the force against the bottoms of his feet as he walked to the bus station? |
by UnstableArt on 4/8/2010 @ 4:43pm | the city literally pushed him away. you know... the force against the bottoms of his feet as he walked to the bus station?
You know - that's technically true. Huh. :D |

Seattle Center humors opponents of Chihuly museum "Last night hundreds of people gathered again to voice our opinions about the best public use of the Fun Forest site at the Seattle Center, and once again we couldn’t help but get the vibe that we were just being humored. Oh, the committee and the Chihuly gift-shop/catering-hall folks at least tried to make a better show of it this time as compared to the insulting propaganda-fest of the first public meeting, but it was still just a show. I didn’t talk to anybody who believed a decision hasn’t already been made." |

by The Jinxmedic on 12/19/2010 @ 7:11am | We should recreate the Fun Forest on the site of the Sauro's dry cleaners. I understand that there is $700,000 available to do that. And perhaps include an exhibit on deep-bore tunnel catastrophes. Wait a second- $2 Billion tunnel? $4 Billion state budget shortfall? Hmmmm.... |
by NineInchNachos on 12/19/2010 @ 9:41am | Bet we could get a discount on all that vintage amusement park equipment. Could even haul out the old never never land statues! Jinx, you're a gosh darn genius! |
by jenyum on 12/19/2010 @ 6:30pm | I wonder if a DIY amusement park complete with never never land statues could somehow spring up at the Luzon site... |
