This is an example of an emergent cartoon.  A direct combination of these real-estate themed blog posts; yet another excuse to drag out the exit133.com condo map; a post-government DIY approach to attracting outsiders; and of course the all horrifying reality that humans are transforming the Planet Earth into a less habitable place

While the REAL-ugly America suffers record heat waves, the greater Puget Sound area is stuck in perpetual overcast room-temperature bullshit.  How cool is that? YOU'LL LIKE TACOMA!  YOU'LL LIKE IT DAMN IT

The Climate Change Refugees (CCRs) will certainly like the housing arrangements here in Tacoma.

Here they can join the Tax Dodging Refugees (TDRs) and live in the luxurious condos downtown and pay no taxes for 10 years or they can join the Work Dodging Refugees (WDRs) and live in Salishan and pay 30% of nothing. Other affordable options are the Hilltop Section 8 Refugees (S8Rs) or our housing for the recovering Drug and Alcoholic Refugees (DARs) or the cribs we provide for Felons Nobody Wants Refugees (FNWRs).

As Mayor Strickland pointed out, we're not Mayberry any more...we're better!

by NineInchNachos on 8/16/2011 @ 7:58am
The Tacoma Urbanist reports the condos downtown are mostly full. My idea is working!

I heard rumors that Kevin is looking for a place downtown. Are you condo shopping sir?

by NineInchNachos on 8/16/2011 @ 9:10am
“Is everyone going to move here when they realize climate change is really happening?” Followed quickly by, “That would be good for house values at least.”

Meteorologist Cliff Mass says we're "nearly heat wave proof"
cliffmass.blogspot.com/2011/07/why-north...

and "the coastal Northwest is one of last places on the planet that will experience warming because of our proximity to the slow-to-warm eastern Pacific."

excellent links TacomaMama.. thanks!

by L.S.Erhardt on 8/16/2011 @ 7:57pm
I dunno about "heat proof", but the fact that we're pretty much the only place in the whole country to be not affected by the heatwave of '11 is very noticeable.

Now, a sea-level rise on the other hand...

by NineInchNachos on 8/16/2011 @ 9:23pm
Sea-level rise will cleanse the slime from the tide flats and float away those awful tank farms. win-win-win!

by The Jinxmedic on 8/17/2011 @ 5:52am
Yup- don't need local industry- jobs are for losers...

Will be claiming possible copyright infringement on the 'swamp cooler' reference. Do like the interesting take on 'the professional' though.

nobody works harder than bacteria and microbes in a marsh. they have a job: Save the Planet. Save the noble ape from itself.

by Jesse on 8/17/2011 @ 11:48am
Water rises enough and Tacoma will overlook the water instead of the tideflats.

Everybody likes our cooler weather. Even cattle-killing sunflowers!

"This year's prolonged wet weather is having the side effect of re-invigorating a noxious weed. The Northwest is seeing a comeback of tansy ragwort, a toxic species of sunflower that farmers thought they had vanquished years ago."

Well I think that the anthropogenic caused climate change will slow down within a couple of decades
when the Petroleum based fuels will become scarce and too prohibitively costly.

Of course this will cause a huge economic problem with high prices for everything, lots of unemployment.

Best thing to do if you're young is prepare yourself for self sufficiency if possible.
As a hypothetical ask yourself could you survive with little or no money?
Imagine living in this country with no money (no jobs) or money that is hyperinflated and commodities too expensive for purchase.
Best to learn how to grow, hunt and fish your own food, cut your own timber, transition to provide your own off grid electrical power,
water collected from rain barrels, consider to downsize your home to a micro house (best) or super insulate a small home.

City Utilities also may become prohibitively costly too so cut back.
Don't rely on motor vehicle transportation because that will disappear within several decades
and even electric cars will become prohibitively costly as well.
Human powered or light human/electric hybrid vehicles will rule the roads and non adapting motorists will be either stranded
or will have to suffer walking.
