Also recently closed, Tacoma's friendliest pharmacy, the Medicine Shoppe (formerly Cost Plus) by Wright Park. Not a lot of independent pharmacies left...

Well, I'm no kid but I can identify 2 of the businesses: The Blackwater and the Volcano. The other two, I don't have a clue.

To be fair, not all of the above listed businesses closed due to the crappy economy. As far as I can tell, Corina Bakery is still open (with new owners). The Kulture Lab guys said from the very start that they were only going to run for a limited time so people didn't get burned out. And Rampart closed 'cuz Steve died (and I don't think we can blame the economy for his death-- he had a pretty cushy day job).

I have an idea -

Espresso business, co-op art gallery, dance studio in large open street level Pacific Ave space with large storefront windows and if desired, additional rentable studio space in the basement (the Rowland Building).

The space is 2,136 sq feet. It also has great acoustics for music and has Merende, Paddy Coyne's for food and drinks on the same block, and Mecon's, 7 Oh One, and the Matadore on the next block.

This gives each business 712 sq feet (rents equal and negotiable). A fourth business could be added if people would be satisfied with 534 sq ft (lower rent).

Business are all compatible enough to move in and around to connect with people and network - look at art while drinking espresso, lounge in comfortable chair while reading art books, or share a latte with that cute dance studio student you have been flirting with -

There is also available studio space in the 3,000 sq ft basement that has a frame shop.

Anyone seriously interested?

Ramp Art is still open. Yes. the owners have changed.

Here is their blog:

Corina's Bakery is open as well:

Still open, yes, but that doesn't mean that their business is not "tits up", as it were. Tressie has said repeatedly that they are suffering from the slow construction on that street.

Let's not forget Herban Cafe. And, of course, the cursed location that has been - since my arrival in Tacoma late 2007 - La Costa, Gringo de Loco AND Stephanie's.

Also, while thinking last night about the businesses that have vanished, I began to wonder something. Perhaps you guys can fill me in: what's the current status of the One Heart Cafe? Last I checked, it was moving...but I'm not sure if that ever actually happened. Upon googling it, all listings still point to the old address, and it hasn't been mentioned in a long while. Can someone give me an update?

Gone.

But something else is moving in:

One Heart Cafe moved (or started to move), and then closed, according to someone who spoke to the owner. They were going to move into a space on St. Helens I believe. Their former location (next to the Grand) is set to reopen this month as Minoela.

blogs.thenewstribune.com/tntdiner/2009/0...

A few more closings or near closings:

Le Le's in Lakewood, East West Cafe on Tacoma Mall Blvd. (they managed to reopen), Seven Muses, Art Concepts on Broadway, Rocky & Coco's.

I'm sad to hear about the closing of so many great Tacoma and area businesses. Running a small business is really tough, though. According to Business Week, only 30% of small businesses are profitable in their lifetime. Around 50% fail in the first five years.

www.businessweek.com/smallbiz/news/colad...

It take a heroic effort to plan, capitalize, staff, supply, have vision for and market a small business. Owners of small business, get support from your banks, local business development entities, non-profits, mentors and advisory boards. It's never easy to run a business, and especially so in harder economic times. Don't wait until things are tough, and it might be too late. It's in our community's interest that you thrive and succeed.

the economy/construction/oldfolksdying/stupidmendying...and just the natural order of things...will close businesses....we're still here for another year-ish..I doubt we'll renew the lease...we'll see! but...many businesses are doing fine to quite well down here...my personal rant concerns the MIA city...help. Where is our free music...free festivals...free promos paid for by your/my tax dollars.

It is a lovely business to be in..the promotion of business by government...but why do only the big guys who don't need help(really) always get the most.....I wanted Tacoma to do some of what NYC has done during the construction in Times Square replacing Broadway with a pedestrian mall with FREE music,"As construction on the project continues throughout the summer, the city has hired an array of musicians, magicians and other performers to keep lunchtime crowds in the area. "

as my friend Kurt Vonnegut would say: "so it goes."

perhaps someday we can all visit our favorite failed business ventures in the UNDERWORLD... see old friends and share adventures long gone like the tales of brave Ulysses.

Just a couple more weeks until the LID construction is basically completed on Broadway. Then cars will be able to park there. We will see what businesses survived.

PSP now has sidewalks, a new road and new street parking. Now they just need to paint the parking strips.

by izenmania
on 6/16/2009 @ 4:10pm
PSP at least doesn't seem to be suffering. Chunks of the Buddy cast have been going in on Friday and/or Saturday nights, and occasional Sunday breakfasts, and It's been pretty consistently hoppin'.

Erik: They are supposed to be done paving Broadway within the next couple weeks. Then they're going to work at the 9th & Broadway intersection AND THEN they are going to go to town with ripping St. Helen's up (in front of the now former Black Water space). At least Rachel won't have to suffer through that part of the LID - that's going to be a total mess!

Interesting choice of subject, RR.

I was, however, hoping for a second week of Watchmen themed Tacomics.
