by marumaruyopparai on 12/2/2008 @ 8:56am | The look of repugnance really makes this one work. |
by izenmania on 12/2/2008 @ 9:25am | Less that two months remaining until the BIG 100. |
by morgan on 12/2/2008 @ 10:00am | Was this a trial run for a City Arts Olympia? It has me wondering if there's enough arts happenings in Tacoma to support a monthly publication.
For the past several years, the amount of arts fund applications to the City of Tacoma has skyrocketed, while the city council has only paid lip service to raising the level of arts in Tacoma. Clearly there is demand and interest by artists, arts organizations, and individuals to increase arts offerings. Only when the city council realizes that in order to get the Creative Class it so desires, the pump must first be primed. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 12/2/2008 @ 10:28am | Olympia, Olympia, Olympia, all these people can do is talk about how cool Olympia it is. It is Olympia this and Olympia that. Blah, blah, blah. If they love Olympia so much they should marry it. What next, they'll be talking about Santa Cruz? |
by NineInchNachos on 12/2/2008 @ 12:31pm | Be sure not to miss Amy McBride's column about overcoming shyness by joining facebook! Also several interesting articles about art an happenings in the great city of Olympia. AND a couple ethereal cartoon strips by local tacoma cartoonists... Though I've never been able to figure out what the hell they are about (like Alley Oop) doesn't make them any less awesome. High five! |
by Erik on 12/2/2008 @ 1:51pm | I think they ran out of Tacoma artistic "content." There was just not enough art in Tacoma to fill another issue.
Less that two months remaining until the BIG 100. Yeah. We need another Feed Tacoma/Tacomic party bad to try to breathe some life into Tacoma. Even the Tacoma blogosphere has been enemic! www.feedtacoma.com/ Six posts out of 100 blogs! Wth the "economy" on the fritz, Frost Park Chalk Offs suspended, business closing and the loss of Grit City et al, Tacoma needs something to celebrate and get excited about. Somebody do something!!!!1! |
by NineInchNachos on 12/2/2008 @ 6:57pm | yes 100 tacomics. truly an event to behold. this one is number 90. It is my goal to have a volume 1 book filled with the 100 best tacomics thus so far. I saw that the city of Tacoma is now accepting applications for the 2009 - 2010 individual artist grants... might help to offset the cost of printing i dunno 600 books? 1000?
Can anybody recommend a reputable local publisher? |
by Erik on 12/2/2008 @ 8:32pm | Can anybody recommend a reputable local publisher? Try these guys. I have heard some good things about them: ![]() ![]() beautifulangle.homestead.com/ |
by morgan on 12/2/2008 @ 10:49pm | So as not to be totally negative- I do think City Arts is a great publication, it was just a little Tacoma-lite. Props to Tom (of BA fame) on his article on William Kupinse - awesome! |
by NineInchNachos on 12/2/2008 @ 11:28pm | We are lucky to have a magazine devoted to the arts such as City ARts. I'm sad though at the missed opportunity to highlight tacoma businesses during a month so heavily focused on gift consumption... the one article that focuses on 'cool finds' is 100% handed over to Olympia shops (complete with numbered street map!). Was it an intentional snub ? I doubt it... though I'm an optimist. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 12/2/2008 @ 11:52pm | I suspect that City Arts just reports on the arts where it finds them. I'm fairly certain that Tacoma has more in way of the arts than Olympia does, first of all Tacoma is a far larger city. What makes Olympia work, and maybe seem so "arty", is that the downtown is very compact, contains many fine amenities, and people actually like hanging out in downtown after 5 pm. I think if you have a place were people are willing to be on the streets after 5 pm you'll most likely find a place conducive to the arts. |
by scout on 12/3/2008 @ 7:56am | People have to support the arts. I sent out a gazillion emails and press releases announcing my art opening. I had some nice food, wine and good work, which received an excellent review by the Volcano - about five people showed up, AND it was artwalk. It made me remember why I stopped having great exhibits by talented artists. My work is up through the end of the year along with Andrea Trenbeath's - Tacoma stop talking about the "cool" art parties with the hipsters, and whatever the current favorite "best" gallery in Tacoma is and show the artists actually doing work that you give a shit. Most of all %$#ing show up! |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 12/3/2008 @ 9:29am | I'm surprised with all the people living at the Olympus apartments that you didn't get a bigger turnout for the free wine and food. |
by Erik on 12/3/2008 @ 11:52am | Was the cover all that bad?
Actual (non-Tacomic) back cover:
I looked through it again today. It does look like TCA made the edition to prmote to Olympia businesses. More may develop. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 12/3/2008 @ 1:01pm | I suspect the Tacoma edition will soon become the "South Sound" edition. Cover everything from Federal Way to Olympia, and possibly Lewis County. |
by NineInchNachos on 12/3/2008 @ 6:47pm | Laura Hanan's new work is very nice. A cool Lichtenstein vibe to it. |
by NineInchNachos on 12/3/2008 @ 8:07pm | also Laura, I just searched my gmail account.. did you send the announcement over the list serve? I don't see any thing about your show! |
by Dave_L on 12/3/2008 @ 8:18pm | Tacoma stop talking about the "cool" art parties with the hipsters, and whatever the current favorite "best" gallery in Tacoma is and show the artists actually doing work that you give a shit.
Been stewing about how to say the same thing (and not sure if I'm even worthy enough to have such an opinion) but you said it better than I could have. The local press has been so much more supportive than it was in the dark ages, and I love how art takes so many creative and innovative forms in Tacoma. But when it comes to the art-scene, too many people are in it for the "scene," and not the "art." I dropped in to watch part of a free art seminar put on by some local artists who, like you, work long hours at it like any profession - People who would be considered so-called established, and the small audience had virtually none of the people who could benefit the most from the mentoring. I wish I could have made your art opening. There was a lot going on that night and I missed almost all of it due to a prior committment. I need to get on your email list. |
![]() by jessicac on 12/3/2008 @ 9:25pm | Some excellent points have been raised thus far. I believe that City Arts is a monthly magazine endeavoring to bring new information and stories to people interested in Tacoma. Maybe those people work in Tacoma and live other places, or live in Tacoma and work other places, or maybe they work and live in Tacoma but are interested in things that may happen outside of Tacoma. I don't believe City Arts, Tacoma, will ever be City Arts, South Sound-- though the topics covered in the magazine may spread outside the city's heart. I believe that, mostly, City Arts, Tacoma, wants to call out Tacoma-relevant stories. A company that puts out a Seattle and East-Side -specific monthly *after* having put out the Tacoma edition (after quite a few months bi-monthly, before going monthly) isn't one likely to abandon its city-local premise, after all. I believe that in the next several months, under a new editorial direction, City Arts may surprise readers with a fresh new approach. I believe that the localism within its pages may gain new depth and breadth; outsiders may gain introductions to the inside, and insiders may discover there's a world outside the "T-Town" bubble they consider insulating and comfortable. As Dave_L mentions in his post, there's a "scene" and an "In crowd" and I believe it also exists in the blogosphere. I believe there's a spirit of acceptance in Tacoma Arts, a spirit of accessibility, that makes any place "scene" worthy, and I believe the Arts in Tacoma, in all forms, are all very worthy of "scenes". I believe the blogosphere may be quick in judgement, and can also be a source of guidance. Along those lines, as a new-Editor helper, I want to get your voices heard. Tell me stories, give me story tips, let me know about strong voices who can tell the stories. And also, know this: we're a monthly publication, which means that we want your calendar items-- thrive on them!, in fact- about six weeks out. Today, I would love to hear about what you're doing in February. Please, give me February, March, April, and beyond, Tacoma-centric ideas that will make CIty Arts your mag. email me at jessicac@cityartsmagazine.com. And I want to talk to you. (Scout-- yeah, this means you!) Call me at 253. 223.3870. thanks, to all!! |
by Dave_L on 12/3/2008 @ 10:05pm | Funny cartoon, but with all City Arts has covered in Tacoma so far, I don't believe we should get all bent out of shape over one issue, and pile-on blog-style. I enjoyed the Birds article, and the one featuring the Tacoma Poet Laureate. And this slick mag is free! You can grab as many armloads as you want! Believe me, you can be absolutely sure jessicac wouldn't abandon Tacoma! Besides, there's a lot to learn from those differences and similarities between the city up north and the one down south. Especially the one down south. (R.R. 'chopped a nice Laura City Arts cover a while back.) flickr.com/photos/77037088@N00/296902273...
At least it's not CitiArts. Then we'd be in trouble. |

by scout on 12/4/2008 @ 8:44am | My cat made a suggestion:
For the upcoming artwalk (December 18th) that Brick & Mortar have an Art Love-In. This would entail everyone bringing a (potluck style) dish and a bottle of wine. Brick and Mortar will provide the art, artists, venue space, and event liquor permit. This event would serve the following purposes: Give all the losers that didn’t show up to Laura Hanan’s recent art opening a chance to redeem themselves, Give Tacomans a chance to show art and artists the love that they are constantly yammering about, Give Tacomans a community building opportunity in a festive holiday environment, and Give hipsters, the cool crowd, and all wannabees the chance to party. I request that Kevin Freitas set up an online RSVP and if less than 25 people RSVP than we don’t have the event. Any comments or suggestions? PS: Attendance is not a tacit endorsement of Laura Hanan’s artwork or that she is someone you want to be friends with. |
by scout on 12/4/2008 @ 8:59am | I have a suggestion: In the spirit of the holidaze and since it is politically incorrect to endorse anything that might smack of Christmas, I suggest that it be mandatory that everyone attending the Art Love-In dress up as ELVES! According to Wikipedia: "An elf is a creature of Germanic mythology. The elves were originally thought of as a race of minor nature and fertility gods, who are often pictured as youthful-seeming men and women of great beauty living in forests and underground places and caves, or in wells and springs. They have been portrayed to be long-lived or immortal and as beings of magical powers." Elves are actually ancient artists! |
by KevinFreitas on 12/4/2008 @ 9:01am | Let's RSVP right here. I'm in. It's on my calendar. I'll bring some addictive ham, cream cheese, pickle wrap thingies. |
![]() by jessicac on 12/4/2008 @ 9:28am | I would love to be "in"! |

Tacoma City Arts mag rules. With magazines, some issues are better than others. The feedback above at least shows that there is no indifference. |
by NineInchNachos on 12/4/2008 @ 8:32pm | i've marked dec 18th in my google calendar |
by Dave_L on 12/4/2008 @ 11:59pm | And I've penciled it in. Sometime between now and then I'm changing my name to Art. |

After a few days to contemplate the issue, this Tacomic on Tacoma City Arts is a boon and will increase TCA visibility and "street cred." The worst response to TCA would have been indifference and a quick trip to the recycling bin. Plus, not every Tacoma City Arts edition can reach the professionalism and local relevance of the now infamous November 2008 edition:
