SCATS

SCATS is hijacked for an important message

posted Sep 30, 2010
Normally this is where I hide a cute roll over anagram for SCATS but I am not doing that this week. Seriously, come out to Comic Book Ink this Saturday and donate to the CLAW scholarship fund! 24 Comic Book Day is awesome!

So it is that time of year again. It is 24 Hour Comic Book Day this Saturday the 2nd of October. And again this year I am stepping up to the challenge. I will join four other esteemed CLAW artists (as well as comic artists and cartoonists from across the country) in attempting to create 24 comic book pages in 24 hours. This year in Tacoma the challenge will be held at Comic Book Ink's new location at 2510 S. 84th, Suites 15A-B Lakewood, WA. I will be there from 8:30 am on the 2nd for 24 straight hours until 8:30am on the 3rd (or until I am finished, throw in the towel or pass out from exhaustion).

This year, like last year, I am also requesting your help. Last year I unofficially asked for people to bring me food and caffeine to keep me going for the 24 hours and offered to literally draw them into the comic if they did so. Word spread around and the amount of edible donations was quite surprising. Now I'd like to officially harness that enthusiasm and good will for a higher purpose.

This year I am asking everyone to stop into Comic Book Ink any time during the 24 hours and donate whatever they can to the Cartoonist League's Young Cartoonist of the Future Scholarship. Anyone that does so will be invited to help me literally write my 24 comic script by filling in deliberate holes I have left in the story MAD LIBS style. You need to be on site during the event to participate and CLAW will accept cash or personal checks (but not credit cards). If you make a donation you can claim one of the options below to make your own and either help create a super awesome story or complicate my challenge to the nth degree (or both). Am I crazy to even attempt to complete 24 comic book pages incorporating elements selected at random by onlookers in 24 hours? yes, I probably am... but the results could be awesome and the effort is for a good cause.

So I hope to see you at Comic Book Ink on Saturday. I'll be there... won't you be there too?

And for all of you planning to bring me food in hopes of appearing in my comic... I hear that Mark Monlux is accepting food donations for his 24 hour comic book attempt and promises to draw you into HIS comic. Who knows, if you still want to bring me food I might try to sneak you into the comic anyway. It is that kind of event!

And now we know "who is who" in SCATS, as well.

I think every artist thinks they are at least 'a god' at some point... and all writers are 'the devil'.

Or... looking at it another way... perhaps it is the concept of God that is the ultimate artistic voice while the concept of writing is or should be considered Devilish...

Who knows... I just draw the thing.

Also, if I get 32 people to promise to come and donate here in these comments before the event I will release the script in advance so that you can see where and in what context the mad libs are incorporated. I will reveal that some are dialog based while others are in the panel discriptions themselves... meaning I need them in order to finish the comic and progress the story. Challenge issued!

FROM MY INBOX:

Attention CLAW!

As many of you know I'm plagiarizing Stowe's idea of drawing folks into my 24-hour comic if they bring in food. But I’m being more specific in requiring it to be meat. They will then roll the Die of Doom that will determine if the get to be human or a zombie.

Yet, not everyone coming into the story will be carrying rib. I’m offering these fine folks a chance to buy their way into my comic if they put a $10 donation into the CLAW Student Scholarship Fund jar.

My challenge to Stowe, and the entire CLAW participating in the 24-hour comic is to make the same offer with the CLAW Student Scholarship Fund! Remember, this is our prime time for collecting funds for the Scholarship. Currently the scholarship is only $250.
