SCATS

SCATS can barely understand what is going on at this point too

It's truly saddening that the political discourse in this country has degraded to such a basal level. Most people would rather throw their middle fingers up high at elected officials than shake their hand and thank them for their service to their country and its citizenry. Local to national officials alike all are viewed first (and at best) as having potential then as villains if merely one vote isn't to our liking or if one quote is spread around after being taken out of context.

Is this a partisan left, right, center, green, etc. issue or does it go deeper than that? My vote is for the latter with my hypothesis being that everyone hates their parents. C'mon, admit it! Even if only partially, at some point or on some plane you feel some form of loathing for the first authorities you knew in your life. And that's truly the issue, authority. For nearly the first two decades in most of our lives our choices are looked over, if not limited, by these people who may mean well but still never quite seem to do what we want to please us.

But politicians could easily be seen as worse mainly because, not only are they authorities, but we picked them! At least with mothers and fathers, as the old saying/excuse goes, you can't choose 'em, it takes the responsibility out of our hands. But when we vote we then become disappointed in a politician because, instead of taking responsibility for how we cast our ballot, we deflect that responsibility onto them so we can feel better about ourselves. Heaven forbid we own up to our choices! Instead, we'd rather stand by and, like that oft-persecuted child to our parents, point a finger and claim that he/she (not I!) did it.

If you're still with me and rolling along with this analogy, I offer this single example to perhaps instill a modicum of sympathy, and maybe even respect, for our elected officials. Imagine politicians are our parents. But not just our parents, parents to hundreds, thousands, or millions of children all at once. Now imagine that, since we all obviously want dinner, they have to decide what's going to be on the table tonight. And, finally, add in the fact that these parents are trying to do all this for all of us with a reality TV show camera crew following their every move.

Seems to me this all makes species who eat some of their young pretty appealing.

Parents take on their responsibilities in a selfless manner expecting nothing in return except the hope that their children will become fully engaged citizens.

Politicians have a much murkier agenda and one which they are loathe to completely reveal.

The contrary can be true of both parents and politicians. Some do it for their own personal gain and some do it as a completely selfless act. All things being equal, I challenge anyone to be a politician or parent -- both incredibly demanding and noble undertakings.

A selfless politician would serve one term, then let the next person serve. Politicians who refuse to let anyone else serve would not be described as selfless, but rather as selfish.

Not sure how being selfless should have a time limit. Should I quite my job after four years just so someone else has the opportunity to take it?

Holding on to something that many people want is the definition of selfish. Thinking that you alone can perform the job adequately is the definition of narcissism. People who work in the public sector and refuse to share their good fortune do move from being selfless to being selfish. It's kind of a gray area but I think most elected officials should leave after 1 term and most public employees should leave after 4 or 5 years and enter the private sector. These jobs are not the personal property of the job holder. People in the private sector should hold their jobs as long as the employer is satisfied with their performance.

@fredo: It's certainly an interesting approach, I'll give you that. Let's just hope, however long someone in public office sticks around, they're aim is of the selfless variety.

@fredo: While I believe that career politicians cause stagnation (or doenation if female). It does take years to master the craft of just about anything. I was a bartender for a decade and I still felt I was always learning and evolving into a better mixologist. By the time a newbie's term is up they are probably just getting their groove on.

Love Scats! I bet The Great and Powerful Oz pours a stiff cocktail. I can't wait to find out who is running the kitchen. Alf? Cat appetizers?

there may be some government employees working in high level positions such as engineering where you may be correct debivans. OTOH do you really think that a person who is working the counter at a government office or is holding a traffic flag is really "evolving" into a better government employee? Any semi-literate person with a HS degree could step into one of those positions today and do just fine. I don't know any government employees who are required to mix complex cocktails.

"I don't know any government employees who are required to mix complex cocktails."

Clearly, you have never visited the White House, US Senate or House of Representatives after 9am,

I thought the subject was elected officials. I don't recall ever voting for a flagger. I bet there are government employees who are required to mix complex cocktails though.

I'm with you on The Great and Powerful Oz and stiff drinks. Just wish he didn't yell in that booming voice so much -- totally harshes my buzz.

We're running a "choose the next SCATS duo" contest via our new Twitter page: twitter.com/SCATScomic

Feel free to drop your idea here as well. The more people who get behind your idea the better the chances of yours being picked!
