Now I am writing this a fourth time.

But now I forgot what I wrote the first three times. It was long and pithy.

Oh well, at least I fixed the link below:

And you thought I was serious about not covering local issues anymore... :-)

it would be awesome to have a walmart downtown...it feels like there would still be a massive traffic snafu as 2000 extra cars tried to left turn onto commerce street, but then we could just blame it on "downtown traffic"

A downtown downsized "big box" retailer could fit nicely on the Pacific Avenue frontage where the Luzon used to be. This would best follow the european model and include parking underneath the retail structure. This would benefit downtown condo and marina dwellers (the grocery store is already a step in the right direction), and would fill a gaping hole on the streetfront- especially if a facade treatment was done to harmonize with the district.

However, my sources tell me this is something that Germany would do, so it would never happen here.

A DT WalMart would bring lots of people. That's what DT needs.

sounds like the old schoenfelds store that used to be downtown...anyone remember the whole generation of politicians that made their meat by "helping" non-retailers "convert" dt into a "technology zone" (it predated the "international finance district"

As long as we're dreaming, how about a downtown IKEA on that Pacific Avenue frontage? Hmm?

I really like the " clean up on aisle 5 " line. Especially w/old city hall in the background.

Thanks, Tacoma1! That was actually a last-miute change, one that I am glad that I made...

broken windows and plywooded doors on our old city hall.

See? See what I mean? Winter's not that far away, and Old City Hall will be toast after another winter without heat. Eric Anderson will get his last laugh when Old City Hall comes down.

I have faith. The lord will protect Old City Hall.

I also have faith...If not the "lord", maybe the landlord?

Good luck with that.

the landlord is about as reliable as a jellyfish.

Jinx, I love this cartoon and your IKEA idea. What about a clothing store for young people like Forever 21? This would be a smart business move since we have UWT and SOTA down here. Or better yet, work out a deal with SIMON the company that owns Tacoma Mall and have them put in a shopping district downtown. That way we aren't in competition with the Tacoma Mall but in partnership. Win/win.
