Supporting local business? Historical preservation? I'm taking signatures for a new proposition...

Supporting Local Business and Encoraging Historical Preservation - YOU can help!

Here is my Proposition 2 (U): Tired of local government ignoring local business? Tired of local government turning a blind eye to historical preservation issues? Here's what YOU can DO:

1) Support local small business. It's that easy. You might pay a bit more than at your local "big box" store, but the rewards are bigger than those of saving a few dollars on that box of strawberry-flavored hex nuts. The "3/50" project is a good way to start.

2) Since the city will never take a lead on historic preservation -even now when two major landmarks are in real danger- it is up to the individual to do something to make a difference. What could that be? Something as simple as joining the only local fraternal organization that holds their original building as a community treasure- and not as an asset to be sold for commercial profit. (Yes, we're talking about the Knights of Pythias here.) The local Pythians consider themselves guardians of this community treasure- but maintenance and repair of the 1906 Italianate edifice of Tenino Sandstone known as Commencement Lodge does cost money. You can help simply by joining or supporting the Pythians. (I mean, use of the club room's vintage pool tables on social nights is well worth the $35.00 annual dues right there.)

In short- don't wait for the city to act- just DO something.

No answer? Well he really should, actually. So should you.

Just as I thought. No interest in supporting local business or historical preservation. No real surprise, actually.

i think the election results speak for themselves.  maybe?  EVEN SO, That's a good deal on membership fees!

Really incredible old building, and I do like some of the members, but the order does not accept women as far as I can tell (they have a "sisters" organization, but I'm so not the ladiez auxiliary) and it looks like you have to swear an oath that you believe in a supreme being to become a member.

Unless the Tacoma order is different.  I hope that these old fraternal orders are able to hold on to their history, but their membership practices are not appealing to me as a modern agnostic with two x chromosomes.

Jen, just put on a big crucifix and a Ellen Degeneres ensemble and you can probably get in EZ.

the point is we've got Americans amongst us who don't give a rats ass about where they buy their toilet paper and who can blame them for not knowing whats better for their local community, they probably don't even have stadium high school diplomas.

I'm really not all that sure why I bother anymore.

It's really not that difficult to go local. All it takes is being conscious of it and a little (but really not much) effort to change up your habits. Did so recently with feeding 28 people at work for a couple days, when I was looking to purchase jeans (got them at UrbanXchange), and last weekend getting a gift for a friend's 2 year-old's birthday (Teaching Toys).

Don't give up @jinx! We <3 you!

i guess when you put the urbanxchange in that light it's not just a place for gritsters.
thanks for your comics RR! is there a special day for thanking illustrators? like on comicon?

The Castle Hall and Club Room suffered water damage in the recent ice storm. Now is a great time to support the Pythians with membership or donations.
