Ocryx and Joe Occupy the Alley

It seems like 50% of the 99% refuse to help the bottom 10%. This makes that 50% of the 99% more like what the active 25% of the 99% believe the 1% to be.

The homeless are part of the 99%, too...

Want to make a real difference? Want to show that you really do care about those who have suffered most during the financial meltdown? Then start at home.  Oh, I forgot- the homeless are "invisible"....

FISH Food Banks of Pierce County don't address the systemic problems of homelessness and hunger, but they do help to alleviate some of the symptoms: www.fishfoodbanks.org/

Everyone knows that once you fall "out of the grid" or "inbetween the cracks" you no longer count as a human being. Your value as a human being is 100% tied to your ability to consume. If you don't have the ability to consume, there is no place for you.
You're just then a scary thing wealthy parents use to frighten their kids into submission with.

"You don't want to be a dentist, Jenny? What, do you want to end up like that old man begging for change on the side of I-5? WELL, DO YOU?"

by The Jinxmedic on 11/2/2011 @ 1:47pm
Well said, Thorax.

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/2/2011 @ 3:29pm
Well, it's a little off.
There are 6 types of people in the system as it's structured today.

-1) "The Invisible". These people do not fit in the socioeconomic system except where needed for tax write-offs. The homeless, the destitute, illegals and people who WANT to be off the grid fall in here. It's not pleasant to discuss or acknowledge them unless it suits your need. People in this group are frequently denied (by action, not legislation) basic rights and dignity. The system makes it horribly difficult to get out of this group. It can be done, but that is the exception.

0) "Resource Hoggers". These are people, whether short or long term who consume "resources" without contributing via consumption. This includes the unemployed, the disabled, the mentally ill and those below poverty level. Those on any kind of state/federal aid fall in this group.

1) "Producers". Those who work the factories/mines/truckers/whoever that actually create consummables from raw materials on up to the Point of Sale. These people are preferred to be as brown as possible and paid as low as possible. They tend to include the "working poor", immigrant communities and the lower rungs of what used to be the Middle Class.

2) "Consumers". Those who buy the consummables. This class overlaps with the first. Their purpose is to solely spend as they're told without thought. This group often contains mid-to-lower level marketing and management types. Those more well off in this group would be the Middle Class, if it still existed.

3) "Executive and Financial Elite". Relatively speaking, this group consumes little but reaps the biggest profits by ownership of productive assets (such as the mine, factory or trucking company). This group includes CEOs, upper management and just about anyone in the 1%. Few minorities and women are in this group. They are for the most part 99% white men.

4) "Political Ruling Class". These people very frequently overlap with the 3rd group. They attain power through accident of birth, their own money and connections. They craft legislation and regulation to their own benefit. Rarely does someone outside of the 1% attain rank much higher than State Legislator. This is also a mostly rich white men's club.

But someday, I will be a number 3 (because I work hard and I is smart), so I don't want to be burdened or slowed down by numbers -1, 0's, 1's, or other 2's. So I'll just side with the other 3's, Thank-you very much.

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/2/2011 @ 4:04pm
Unless you were born into 3, marry into it or have strong networks with people in it, your chances of getting past 2 are slim.

Currently number a two working on being a number negative one. Almost there!

I was born into a One, verging on Zero family. For a great many years, we were Zero verging on Negative One. My dad has moved back up to One, both my sisters are in Two and I'm in the middle-top area of Two.

I'm working to get to Three, but it isn't easy.

by The Jinxmedic on 11/2/2011 @ 5:26pm
I have no aspirations of three, let alone two. I took vows of poverty, and it shows. Negative one, here I come!

by daubermaus on 11/2/2011 @ 5:43pm
I was born a member of the cash economy, it's a good place to be by choice and a miserable place to find yourself by accident.

maybe they should go over to the volcano and get stacks of issues to read and to hand out amongst themselves. it should take their minds off of things:)

by NineInchNachos on 11/2/2011 @ 6:25pm
a volcano box with a stack of flaming volcano papers is a good source of heat in an emergency

not to mention a great way to smoke signal fire and communicate with others around the metro areas. the homeless in front of the oly ymca surly can thus transmit messages to the 99 over at the lake and get their voices heard too...:)

"Currently number a two working on being a number negative one. Almost there!"
This could use an explanation.

by The Jinxmedic on 11/3/2011 @ 5:02pm
Using Thorax's rather simplified formulae, rejecting the role of "consumer" (eg; "Their purpose is to solely spend as they're told without thought") and aiming towards "people who WANT to be off the grid fall in here".
For "off the grid", read "mostly independent and self-sufficient". A simple goal, although probably not a realistically obtainable one.
(It could also be construed to mean that the steadily shrinking buying power of one's dollar may eventually place an individual in one of these lower categories in an involuntary manner, but that would not be desirable...)

by The Jinxmedic on 11/3/2011 @ 5:03pm
No spaces, no paragraph breaks, no italics, and more "stack overflow" messages. Kevin, can you fix this?

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/3/2011 @ 6:56pm
@ Jinx...Precisely. The existence in groups 0 and -1 indicates having either "no value" or "negative value" to the system. This isn't a value system based on one's worth as a human being, but as an economic contributor to the current system, as it's been engineered by those at top.

This numerical formula is also an explanation of essentially how much power one wields within the system. Being in the Zero group is essentially being left to your own devices. You have little help or recourse outside of the charity and state aid circuits. And those are controlled by higher groups. The Negative One group is in a situation where the system seems to actively harm those within it.

I'm actively trying to refine this formula. The idea is possibly adding a Group 5, which would be the pan-global elite. These are the few who have sufficient wealth and power that not only can they directly affect nations outside of their own, but they also are able to exist in a super-national state. That is, they have sufficient resources to not be tied to a single nation.

Also, possibly adding a -2 group. These people would sadly fall even below the "invisibles" of -1. In the -1 group, you're ignored unless it's convenient. In the -2 group, one would be actively HIDDEN. This would include refugees, slaves, indentured servants, sweatshop laborers and political prisoners. These are people who aren't even given a chance to be on the consumption end of the equation. Their whole "purpose" in the system is to be consumed by the system itself.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

by JesseHillFan on 11/3/2011 @ 7:19pm
How about those of Nobility.Would you put those in the 5 grouping or make a 6th one for ruling Kings,Queens etc.
A 7th tier for a God,Gods etc.
Would incarcerated criminals also be in the -2 tier?

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/3/2011 @ 7:29pm
I'd put what little nobility there is left into 3 or 4 depending on their title and particular nation. With royalty there they'd mostly fit in Group 4. The exception to that I think would be the Saudi royalty. Those people have sufficient money and connections to warrant Group 5.
Incarcerated persons would likely be in -1 or -2 depending on what nation they're in as well as the magnitude of their sentence.
As for deities, I don't think this system would apply.

I see most US prisoners as 0, -2, or 2.  They are most definitely not -1 in that they are very much on the grid and an entire industry is built around tracking their lifestyle choices.
-2 should include the metally ill homeless.
