Ocryx and Joe moderate out

When crazy comes to home, it's time to move on.

(Please note that the pronoun usage shifts throughout this caption- "I" refers only to the artist, "We" refers to the artist and the writer together.)

We have noticed a continual decline in civility on this site, particularly where commentary is involved. Typically, it is something we deal with in stride, being that free expression is one of the cornerstones of a free society. (We have warned of this de-evolution in previous comics, but the calls seem to fall upon deaf ears.)

However, when such expression turns to bullying with an implied threat of "SWATting", this results in redetermining exactly how far we at O&J are willing to go in order to continue as a voice of moderation and compassion in a crazy world. When our family is put at risk with such threats, this becomes an environment in which we feel is no longer safe to play.

During my post-Evergreen career, I have been engaged in the public safety environment as a firefighter, paramedic, and law enforcement officer- I have seen first hand what tragedy can result from these types of threats. In a SWATing incident, law enforcement personnel enter an environment that they are led to believe is extremely dangerous- which puts everyone in the home in immediate and mortal danger as officers respond by forced entry with weapons drawn. I cannot fault the law enforcement personnel, they are simply doing their job and entering what they believe to be a high-risk environment. After all, this is a time of crazy people with guns- what would you expect to happen?

Therefore, we take threats to our safety very seriously, and because of this, we will be looking to re-host our comics on another site. We will no longer resond to comments on Feed Tacoma, which includes comments to this final comic.

We remain committed to our community- we are actively involved with our VFW post up on McKinley hill, and my "walking mission" will continue to serve the First Creek area. I have served my country, my state, and my community in many, many ways over the years. I actually considered "O&J" as a mission field, to help promote civil discourse as an answer to the more prevalent ranting and obscenity typically present in public community forums. In this goal, we have ultimately failed.

AND FOR THE RECORD, I do NOT own an "assault rifle" or other "modern" firearms (although it is completely within my rights to do so as a US citizen), I am NOT a member of the National Rifle Association (although I did threaten to join at one point), and I did NOT vote for Mitt Romney. I'm an Evergreen grad, for crying out loud.

All is not lost- there will be an O&J book at some point in the not-too-far-off future, (the first volume will simply be entitled, "Ocryx and Joe- the complete FeedTacoma years"), and the strip will continue (without enabled comments) somewhere else. It was a good run, and we had fun- but to paraphrase what Kenny Rogers once so eloquently said, "you have to know when fold them". Now is that time.

I'll miss the O&J strip here jinx but you know what's right for you.

I'm sorry to see O&J go.  I'm also sorry that out-of-control "ramped up" rhetoric, which is increasingly common on most websites nowadays caused this, including here on FeedTacoma.  There is a reason that many websites have a moderator who will step in and delete posts and, in extreme cases, delete user accounts.

It is also why on my personal blog site, I have it set for me to authorize all comments before they are published.  Not only does it stop a lot of spam, but it has kept a few hostile commenters from having a free forum on my site.

by Maria on 12/19/2012 @ 3:54pm
A lot of websites are moving to Facebook commenting systems because it helps tone down the rhetoric a bit. Knowing your comments stay with you and are identifiable in context of your family, work and community can help to prevent the most vitriolic comments. Not always. But it is one way people are attempting to reduce the inflammatory digressions in almost any discussion.

I guess a lot of us use anonymous commenting to process pain and emotion in our lives, in effect, kicking the digital dog to assuage some inner demons. Even in the physical world, that's usually done behind closed doors and not in public places. So anonymous commenting is cool because of free speech, but the cloak of not being identifiable allows for all kinds of reprehensible speech also.

Sorry to see you go, but I understand, incivility can be frightening when it slides towards malice.

self-deporting just as Mittens predicted.

a sad day for cartooning.

by NineInchNachos on 12/19/2012 @ 5:17pm
personally I know both commenters and I think this is a huge over reaction.
BUT you gotta do what you gotta do.

(I've been threatened with physical violence, blackmail, and lawsuits for my silly cartooning efforts so I feel your pain.)

Also sad to see you go, O&J. Were FeedTacoma more a full-time job for me I'd consider moderating though it's not my preference to have a hand as such in a free and open site like FeedTacoma. I highly recommend you and anyone who's not a fan of any particular commenter use the handy "mute" option by anyone's avatar. I think it's actually a rather novel solution because it lets you the individual choose who you hear from and ignore the rest.
With regards to Facebook commenting I totally agree with @Maria that it's worked for the likes of the TNT but I'm rarely willing to hitch my tech wagon to a 3rd party system like that especially since I know some FeedTacoma commenters do no have a Facebook account.
I'm absolutely open to ideas on this and anything else FeedTacoma (yes RR, comic template editing!). And, if y'all want to help me quit my day job and do nothing but this, please send checks to... ;)

I have no interest in moderated community.  except for maybe spam posts about skin care therapy..  I can see blatant threats like "I'M GOING TO KIIIIIIIIIIIILLLIIIYOU!!!" being bad

but I keep rereading that quote and it just seems like a pointed argument. I've read worse written against fredo maybe?

by troysworktable on 12/19/2012 @ 9:02pm
NIN: I absolutely disagree with you.  The comment/quote wasn't a pointed argument.  The commenter was nasty and brash, pointed fingers, called names, beat down his opponent until there was nothing to do but flee.  I'm all for as little moderation as well, but that assumes that everyone "plays nice."  That doesn't mean that there can't be heated arguments and debate and passion about one's position.  But the commenter that caused this is one who constantly belittles those he disagrees with.  His comments become personal and pointed in an "Et tu, Brute?" sort of way.  And I call that bullshit.

It looks to me that FeedTacoma offers access to anyone who would like to express their viewpoint. This site offers an amazing opportunity for most any individual to start a personal blog and develop the finer points of discourse in a community forum. I've been reading and writing here for over five years and the experience has been very satisfying and rewarding.

You all seem like nice people. Let's get acquainted. No expectations.

by daubermaus on 12/20/2012 @ 12:39am
Someone took the time to dig up our home phone number and called multiple times.  It's BS.  It's been going on for a while.  And I'm done.
"muting" a person means you won't see their threats.  a moderator hitting the ban hammer means they wander off and troll someone else.

by JesseHillFan on 12/20/2012 @ 4:00am
I must have missed seeing this threat post.Perhaps you guys deleted it.Anyway I'll miss the Ocyrx & Joe comics here too.

by KevinFreitas on 12/20/2012 @ 6:50am
Are those phone threats tied to anyone here @daubermaus? If so, feel free to email me at kfreitas@feedtacoma.com Unfortunately, a ban is also only a ban in so much as someone who earns such an honor doesn't know they can always get around that on any site by simply signing up for another free email address somewhere. :(

by NineInchNachos on 12/20/2012 @ 7:21am
star 69 !

refuse to be terrorized!

(I very much doubt anyone here is calling your house, but what do I know!)

by cisserosmiley on 12/20/2012 @ 8:37am
Amazing -or- Weird ... either way the solution is more participation not less, but I understand those who choose less and will hope everyone will come back one day.

by fredo on 12/20/2012 @ 8:54am
More participation, more issue exploration through debate, more on-topic comments, more gentlemanly or ladylike postings.
Let's make those our feedtacoma New Year's resolutions.
What do you say?

by NineInchNachos on 12/20/2012 @ 8:56am

by KevinFreitas on 12/20/2012 @ 9:27am
I'm all for it and if there's any way I can help please let me know.

by cisserosmiley on 12/20/2012 @ 10:29am
If the Tacoma Urbanist & Sub-Urbanist can coexist on feedtacoma, I have high hopes lowbar can construct shorter cohesive comments & be slightly less abusive when emotions flare. I LOVE the crows!!!!!! Please draw more crows & let me comment!!!!

by Jesse on 12/20/2012 @ 10:43am
That's too bad. I enjoy your comments and comics. I suppose this means that your terrorist "wins."

by L.S.Erhardt on 12/20/2012 @ 6:06pm

But maybe O&J will become something more... something underground, something far more powerful.

by low bar on 12/20/2012 @ 8:16pm
Tell the truth Jinx.

First you put down that you voted for Obama, then you changed it to "and I did NOT vote for Mitt Romney".

Why? Did you at first think lying about your Obama vote would make you look more moderate?

"I voted Gary Johnson for president as there was no monarchist candidate running." -- Jinxmedic

I don't care who you voted for. I do care that you lied about your Obama vote at first just to make yourself look more moderate then you really are.

Tell the truth.

by cisserosmiley on 12/21/2012 @ 12:32am

Maybe this one could work?
