Ocryx and Joe

Ocryx and Joe- Going, going, - gone. Alt Heidelberg going "auf weidersehen" forever.

After all in is unsafe. (And we know what that means.)

Don't worry about that pesky history- after the city removes all evidence of its existence, we will always have been at war with Eastasia.

Alt Heidelberg is slowly being erased from the collective memory of the city- first the student prince mural, now the sign from atop the brewery, next- the building itself. Fortunately, it will soon be replaced by a spanking new surface parking lot, all part of turning Tacoma into a vibrant center of modern commerce- just like Federal Way!

Nice. There seems to be a huge push everywhere to turn buildings into surface level parking lots through one means or another.

Everywhere? Nah. Just in Tacoma.

Yes it is an observable fact that Tacoma is gaining surface level parking lots. But friends, sometimes the unobservable is far more important.

An idea in Tacoma that is moving from potentiality to actuality is the utopian vision of community gardens and community greenhouses linked by bike paths and walking trails.

At this point we can only see before our eyes the demolition of buildings, the demise of bus service, and the narrowing of Tacoma streets.

But brethren, I beseech you in the name of female politicians, Think what a wonderful world is ahead for Tacoma.

SO I GUESS, LIKE, NOW WE JUST HAVE TO START OVER AND
START REBUILDING EVERYTHING, LIKE OUR HOUSES, AND... BUT I WAS THINKING MAYBE INSTEAD OF HOUSES, WE COULD LIVE IN TEEPEES, 'CAUSE...IT'S BETTER IN A LOT OF WAYS. OK, THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY. THANKS.

I was thinking more like backpacking around the city and throwin' down a sleeping bag in a community poppy field.

Heh, Heh, Heh...poppies will make us sleep...

So, when is the Student Prince being returned to the side of the Joy Building again? Sounds like a good art project to me...

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the brewery district...

The city wants to know what the long-term plan should be for south downtown and the brewery district.  Is it just me, or is that a weird question to be asking when the short-term plan seems to be letting the existing 100+ year old buildings collapse under their own weight?  Who is going to implement this plan and why would they take it on?

jen, I heard about the roof collapse at a city maintenance building. Wonder how much longer it will be prudent for the city to spend 70% of it's resources on payroll and only 30% on maintenance and all other concerns. I'll bet, in the coming year, the taxpayers are going to be getting the bill for upgrading city hall (Medical Arts Bldg) and the Winthrop. These are going to be whoppers.
