Ocryx is perplexed about the difference in gas prices locally, even between two stations run by the same tribe located mere blocks from each other. Why? Why? Why do crows care about gasoline pricing? Sigh.

Well, nothing says Happy New Year like a fresh dose of inflation. And speaking of HNY, your friends at Fredo City are wishing THE JINXMEDIC, O & J, and Nimbly, Noms, et al a great 2011. Enjoyed all the wonderful cartoons. |

yes, I remember in High School, the science teacher explained to us that the ice age was caused by global economic indicators. |

by fredo on 12/29/2010 @ 8:39am | Everyone who invests in mutual funds, including lots of everyday working people and union members, is enjoying a healthy level of appreciation in their portfolio thanks to oil profits. I don't hear anyone complaining. |
by NineInchNachos on 12/29/2010 @ 8:43am | is comment #1 not a obfuscated complaint? |
by NineInchNachos on 12/29/2010 @ 8:44am | if gas prices had stayed up round 4 bucks a gallon perhaps Palin would still be governor of Alaska. |

by Thorax O'Tool on 12/30/2010 @ 2:23pm | Something interesting, you may wish to know: 1) law prohibits gas stations for selling gas at less than wholesale+taxes, even for sales or promotional events. This was designed to protect smaller companies from the big multi-nationals 2) Gas stations can tack on however much additional profit as the market will allow 3) the current wholesale gas price per gallon is right about $2.50 for 87, $2.59 for 89 and $2.70 for 92 octane 4) the NYMEX crude futures is currently $89.43 per barrel, or $2.13 per gallon. Of course, 1 barrel of oil does not make 1 barrel of gasoline. There's other stuff in there like diesel and kerosene. But as the price of crude goes up not only does the cost of the raw material rise, but so does the cost of delivery, processing and final product distribution. In a nutshell what I'm saying is that what you pay at the pump isn't a liner 1:1 kind of relationship. It's messy, complicated and exponential. |
by tacoma1 on 12/31/2010 @ 12:00am | Just some exerpts from a Washington Post Article dated 6/13/10 (back when gas seemed cheap) on the true cost of gasoline. If someone wants to complain about transportation subsidies, the price of gas is a great place to start.
www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/ar... "How much does a gallon of gasoline cost? It seems like an easy question...........the gasoline you're buying at the pump is --too cheap............. Gasoline has so many hidden costs.........according to the Energy Information Administration, the average price of a gallon of gas was $2.72 last week. It should really be as high as $4.37. |
by fredo on 12/31/2010 @ 7:41am | "For all the complexity of calculating the true cost of gasoline, however, it's unclear that it matters as much as some might think." Washington Post |
by The Jinxmedic on 12/31/2010 @ 8:36am | $5.00/gallon by February. |
by NineInchNachos on 12/31/2010 @ 11:22am | the environment subsidizes gasoline use. how much is clean air worth? how much is it worth to walk around outside without getting skin cancer? How much is the food chain worth? |

by fredo on 12/31/2010 @ 12:22pm | "the environment subsidizes gasoline use" nachos
that was pointed out by tacoma1 and the story he linked. That story discussed the environmental costs that were hidden in the production of oil. But the author also alluded to the fact that the production of coal was also subsidized by the environment. For that matter so is the production of natural gas and probably nuclear energy. Hydro power also is subsidized by environmental degradation. If there is anybody reading this thread who is making significant use of a source of power which does not harm the environment and therefore is not subsidized by the environment would he or she now present us with this information? We'd all love to learn about it. |
