Arkady and Vladimir have some time to kill while at Kandahar airfield. Vladimir suggests watching "The Beast", and Israeli-made film from the 1980's. In the film, a lost Soviet tank crew is trying to find their way to the Kandahar road after destroying a village. The tank commander, a psychotic killer, places the crew in continual jeopardy in this pursuit, ultimately turning against his own crew. The film, while definitely anti-soviet, shows individuals as individuals, and doesn't quite give the mujahidin a free pass, either. There were many copies of this movie on our base. Of course, there is no wine in Afghanistan (in deference to the religious views of our Afghan hosts.)

Regarding our empire's future in South-Central Asia (not the mid east, that's somewhere else), I believe that anything I might say as an opinion could be viewed as an official statement, and therefore I must refer you to the 446 AW Public Affairs office. (phew- dodged THAT one...)

on 12/4/2009 @ 11:29am		If you saw the real crew in the mess hall, you would instantly recognize these two as being pretty accurate characterizations of the actual people. Viktor Vasilyvich, however, is a composite of three other members of the crew (not seen in KYRGYZ 606), but are also crossed with Borat (after all, Kazakhstan does border Kyrgyzstan), ultimately making him a four-in-one character.

Homer is A LOT shorter than Vladimir- but what they do have in common is that neither is seen without their hats, so there is that.
