Just for fun here, thought I'd post something experimental.Something radical. Something futuristic.
I have a Wacom Bamboo, and I'm finally learning how to use it. I present to you, a novelty. A vision of the 21st century. The first ever Fail Whale that exists only in digital hyperspace. The first panel that I have drawn on the computer. Yes, the only one without a paper version that exists here in meatspace.
So, it's rough and needs MUCH refining, but here it is for your mockery.

by NineInchNachos on 1/17/2011 @ 8:16am | are you using gimp? Is there a pressure sensitivity setting? |
by The Jinxmedic on 1/17/2011 @ 8:53am | One of these days, I need to get one of those tablet thingies.. |
by KevinFreitas on 1/17/2011 @ 3:08pm | Gimp isn't too friendly with pressure sensitivity at least out of the box. My copy wasn't utilizing the pressure sensitivity of my Wacom. Might have to look for drivers or a plugin somewhere. Great work Thorax and I encourage all budding digital artists to tune in to watch Photoshop Hero Stowe draw up tonight's comic 7-9pm at SCATScomic.com |
by Thorax O'Tool on 1/17/2011 @ 5:53pm | The pressure sensitivity in GIMP 2.6 worked fine, and I actually found it to be annoying. I didn't know it did that, and it was kind of a hassle to undo. I suppose if I know how and why I'd be using pressure sensitivity, I might go for it. |
by NineInchNachos on 1/17/2011 @ 6:05pm | line variety! keeps your drawing from looking like it was drawn with a mouse :) |
by Thorax O'Tool on 1/17/2011 @ 8:24pm | yet it was drawn with a mouse (sorta)... I think I ought to tweak settings, because the pressure makes your line fainter towards the BG color when you press less. I'd really rather have the width of the line change. |
by NineInchNachos on 1/17/2011 @ 8:34pm | well ya that's the idea. should be able to configure a brush that just changes width of line.. press harder = bigger line. try also doing color on second layer set to muliply. but I don't know jack about gimp so i'm not very helpful! |
by KevinFreitas on 1/17/2011 @ 9:19pm | That was the prob I had with it. It would do transparency but not line thickness which is pretty lame. Just opened it up to play again and report on my findings... |

by KevinFreitas on 1/17/2011 @ 9:38pm | Great success! Just got my Wacom working 100% in Gimp in Ubuntu. Use the first link mostly for getting a clean install then the second for managing the tablet in Gimp: help.ubuntu.com/community/Wacom feeblemind.org/blog/index.php?post/2010/... From there make sure you are showing the "Brush Dynamics" area in your main Gimp toolbar. To the right of "Pressure" make sure "Size" is checked. |
